sharks at barges

I know everyone hates the grey suits moving in on a nice fish out on the barges.

But has anyone tryed to catch the sharks out there. They fight hard and most time they fight dirty and fight a f**king load harder.

I know its all about the sport and they release like nothing had ever happened.

but then again its not a fish (to get a pic with) its a shark. but if go out there you go for sport fish and for me (dont no about anybody else) a shark is a worthy apponent.

Not difficult to hook one, but you'll regret it about an hour into the fight. Hauling a beast up from deep water is gruelling work!

When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:

n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or

n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

Bastards just lie on bottom, it's like fighting a piece of reef

Definitely need very HEAVY gear if you want to drag one up from the barges.

yeah either of those will do

yeah either of those will do the job (depending on what line you've got on there).

You want at least 400m of line i reckon, and a serious rod. I once thought I was snagged out there for like 5 mins before we realised that we had drifted half a mile off the spot and I had my drag still locked. He just sat there. Had to bust him off as was on PE3

Just make sure you lose a really long wire trace, at least as long as the shark you are hoping to catch.

You'll get sick of it

Fri, 2012-11-02 12:43

On my boat, we've pulled probably half a dozen boatside....ones that have been lipped hooked and haven't bitten through the flourocarbon leader.  These have been on traditional jigging gear (Stella 20000 and Shimano T-Curve 400).

Takes a while and I've only had one that I couldn't get to the top...given that the Bronzies we got to the side of the boat were probably 10-12 feet, god only knows how big that one was.

It's not as much fun as you think....just consumes a lot of time

Yep, had a couple of Mulloway

Fri, 2012-11-02 13:40

Yep, had a couple of Mulloway taken last week when we stopped on the way in after trolling. Put on the stainless shark hook & trace on the Tiagra 50W 24kg stand up, with a 2kg skippy & a 24oz sinker atached to the swivel via lacky band. Drag pretty much started ticking off instantly it got to the bottom, counted to 10, hit lever to strike & whack the rod. 4 & 1/2 hrs later we had around 4m, 350kg oceanic whaler along side. Drifted from 110m to the 50,s 7km from hook up.
