Sharks from years back

Some pics of sharks taken during the time working as a pro sharkfisherman up north and around the capes down south.

The first one is an oceanic blue, caught out to the west of Naturaliste reef.

The second is a thumper size hammerhead, caught north of Bedout Island, north east of Hedland. It had 47 full grown young about 90cm long in it and all released live to swim away.

The third and fifth both tigers about to say hello to mister Swibo. While fishing the northern waters all sizes of sharks were cut in to 8-10 kg slabs, put in the brine tank till temp was gown to 3-5deg,plastic wrapped then down to the blast freezer. The total catch was exported to Asia.We had markets for the stomach, claspers, jaws and cartiledge. In the foregroundis a sandbar whale thats had its spine removed ready to go in to the brine tank.

The forth one is an average hammer caught off Canal Rocks down south

Few

Surprisingly up north we got very few scale fish, but then again we were mainly setting over flat muddy bottom usually in the range of 30-70metres in depth.
If we caught a shark with dead pups inside they were used as bait the next day almost guaranteeing a big one on it.

More than not if in a rare occasion we got a mackie,9 out of 10 time it was just a head left

never seen sharks like that before - i used to work on a wetliner up north and we always used to get the small whalers - all the big ones bit thru the leader

Just curious, is this sort of fishing happening now in Australian waters? Or have we tightened up on the fishing regulations.

The zone we fished in up north has been closed for about 2 years now.The southern one is still open subject to periodical closures and no go areas

Man they are mahoosive sharks carnarvontie. I did some time onboard a pro boat netting for sharks down off the Capes region in the late 90's, and i never saw anything as big as those giants caught. Using the same big net on the drum at the back of the boat too.

Mind you a few times we had big sections of net missing. Boss just said must be Great Whites. We did once get the head of a hammerhead that probably would have gone near the size of the one being held up in your pic. Pity the rest had been chomped off. Mainly got gummy's, school, thickskin, wobby's and small whalers. Kind of glad we never got anything that big i imagine they are a handfull.

Great pics anyhoo, love seeing the old school photos, love to see more if you have any!

Solly I would love to but unfortunately Fisheries might have a little bit to say about it.

Diehard, the boat with the net reel is 12 metres and the other is a fraction under 24 metres, the one that Jeff has provided the links is 20 metres

Been trying to get a snippet off a tape showing a biiig dusky whaler bitten in half coming over the side, one bite and its about a metre thick where its bitten through
