Shimano V Gillies

Hi folks, i'm not sure if this subject has been bought up in here but i'm sure someone will let me know if it has. I'm interested in opinions or comparisons between the Shimano Lucanus & the Gillies Octas jigs. To me they seem similar in what fish they are set up to target but an obvious difference in price. Is it worth the extra money to go with the Lucanus or is the Gillies good value at the cheeper price. Any feed back or experiences with either would be appreciated. Thanks  Rob

i have found that the "less is more" theory works for me. The lucanus has a bit less crap haning off them, which seemed to work better. I suppose you could trim up the octas

there quite a few other manufactures mate

either way you will need to upgrade your hooks, the shimano although my favourite of the two has a crapola set of hooks, opened so many of the standards up!

The "less is more" theory is an interesting one. You'd think bigger fish like bigger baits than some weedy skirt lure. I've used the octas and caught several dhuies on them (ranging 2-4kg) so they seem to work well for me when i've used them :p (red was what was firing on one day in particular). No luck on the lucanus though (havent used as much though). However, up at the abrolhos, most were using lucanus over other brands and getting fish on them. I havent caught any fish on the raba rabas, but thats because 4 or 5 fish unstoppables have pinched them (so they're my fav Cool). Quite minimal skirts on them which works to the "less is more" theory.

Brad, what line are you using for the jigs? The hooks seem reasonably strong on the lucanus, but then they're only designed for 20-30lb max line (hence makes sense upgrading if running heavier). Though, the bigger fish you get in the north might crunch the hooks in their mouth. Unfortunately doesnt seem to be much of a problem down here.

Make sure you read up on how to use them though (seen some people work them life knife jigs Sealed)

Don't like the Gillies at

Don't like the Gillies at all, just don't seem to have as good of an action in my opinion. Lucanus jigs are a personal fav, and I like that they're available in 200g size as the heavier weights are a must when jigging out wide of Dampier. I'm also a huge fan of the daiwa bay rubbers, I just wished they came in heavier sizes. I upgrade the hooks on my 150g and 200g Lucanus jigs to a single 3/0 or 5/0 owner SJ-41 as the standard hooks can't cope with PE4-5.
