Shock leaders For Surfcasting?

How many people use shock leaders for surfcasting? If i had 20lb mainline would i use a 60lb leader for a 12ft rod or would i
need to go smaller , how long would it have to, would it need to wrap around the reel a few times ,does the join become a problem with the rod guides?

I use shock leaders to help keep my line being cut around
reefs and rocks and to protect my line from tailor. If you are using 20lb I would think 40 lb leader would be plenty.

Its all dependant on the
Its all dependant on the weight your casting, few wraps around the spool is fine, never had a problem with knots going through guides even though it makes a ungodly sound when going through, 60lb will be fine for 20lb for general fishing even 40lb is great.

300yd braid backing of 30lb
300yd braid backing of 30lb the rest used mono topshot 30-40lb, the braid never has to see light unless you hook something big then it might give you a higher chance to land it.

Using Ricthers
I am a big convert to braid so I use it a lot. Some people will question that for LB fishing but I have become used to it.
For Richters (and I do this a lot) I tend to use a short leader onto the plug withouth affecting my cast (no leader through the eyes).
For baits on my 12 footer I tend to use a good quality 40lb fluro leader that goes about 4-5 times around my spool. Lots of good reasons for this and it works great if your joiner is a good knot.
IMO when casting, keep the leader to the best quality and have good knots. Lighter the leader the better chances of a hookup and best casting results.

FWIW i just went to wedge
FWIW
i just went to wedge using 30lb braid to 80 lb shock leader to 40lb fluro bite leader
braid to shock was gt knot. no trouble casting at , but winding in , i find the gt knot gets caught on bail roller.
no biggy tho.
If I spent half as long fishing , as I do reading this bloody forum , I'd be twice the fisherman I am.

hey brenzfirst time up there
hey brenz
first time up there since the road put in. spin out how you end up at the shacks.
anyway , our spot up there is now much more accesible sadly , and someone was on it for the first night so didn't do amazing , but 2nd night they had moved.
got burleying before sundown and had the usual dart and big herring till sunset when the tailor came on the bite. got virtually a tailor a cast up to 50cm for a short while . shame about the moon or i'm certain the mullaway would have been on the cards too. did lose something considerably better but ?????
how about you guys??
