shonky workmanship

i was talking to a friend last week about shonky work he had done on a car, and was wondering how many people have been bitten... We had some work done on our old boat motor a couple of years back (head gaskets)and it took the guy 3 times to get the motor running right after the job was done(supposedly), picked the boat up mid week as we were heading to shark bay on the friday night, we arrived in shark bay on saturday morning safe and sound, when we decided to put the boat in the water on monday for a short run it ran like a chaff cutter, was not happy. a mechanic up there took a look at the motor and said"not good" , he pulled the motor apart and discovered the head was badly damaged . it needed some major work at around 2 weeks worth and $3500 , we ended up with a brand new motor for $4000 as it was not worth messing around with the old one.........So has anyone been bitten with work on boat , car or around the house?

To be honest at the moment

Tue, 2009-07-14 15:24

can't say we have had any dodgy trades people,  Bob put the starter motor in yesterday at the auto electricians and he just rung up totally stuffed (we had slight accident in April launching boat and trailer in the water with boat on, can't go into specifics as somebody is red faced about it ha ha ha) the auto electrician is looking for a new starter motor for him, as we don't know what model car it came off as it was made by a mate, pretty good going for 20yrs no maintenance, just a little put of WD40 every now and then.  As far as the out board Bob got new in 1992 and always went to Portside Marine for service and never have we had  a problem, touch wood.

Holidays...

...always take the boat for a run, even if it's just in the sound or the Peel estuary, before going off on a trip. Just hooking the hose up to it and running it for a while most likely will not bring any niggling problems to the surface. Motor has to be operated "under load" and all the other bits (gears, steering, etc) must be put to the test as well. Not to mention giving the trailer a good bumpy run down the highway.

Having said that, the first thing I did after getting the E-tec serviced and hydraulic steering put in, was go to West End! Fortunately, no dramas then or since!

A. Start your motor the day

Wed, 2009-07-15 07:51

A. Start your motor the day before you go fishing, especially if you havent been out for a while.

B. Go for a spin out in the ocean before you do 2000 kilometers to a regional destination. You could spend two weeks watching the mechanic find out that it was a gasket.

My sister had a call from the dealership 2 weeks ago when she put in for her factory service.  The sales manager said she needs the brakes replaced. She thats odd I only had them replaced 6 months ago. After taking the car to her regular mechanic he pointed out they had hardly worn.

It boils down tot he fact that the service manager at the dealership was trying to get his commision up. Total rort.

i have been lucky so far . i prefer to stick to one service company, i get to know them and they know me, sometimes i will pay a bit extra on a service but the company knows i will always return to them and not just hunting down the cheapets price in town and if i want something done in a rush or want some good advice they spend the time to go out of their way for me. if i have a trip planned i  will  always have my rig serviced a month before and give a day out just to ensure everything is right

dealerships fav rort is to swap oil filters tween cars if they arent damaged

current talk about town is that one particular oil manufacturer (not a major) is using recycled oil , cleaning it and selling it as new oil

pre start sevice on new cars..wot service..many they do nothing...take a grease gun to a new car and see how many shots it takes to fill variuos points in the linkages setup......

some1 has to pay for all that advertising........= apprentices, timed servicing down to the qauter of an hour and if it aint finished....bad luck.........not all dealershipsa are like this but i would never ever let a dealership touch my car unless i stand ther and watch....and for $90/hr im entilted to i reckon

word of mouth is hte better option to find new tradys
