Shop spooled reels - shitty line.

So about 13 months ago, I picked up an egg beater from one of our site sponsors, as a backup for my beach rod. It had sat in the shed for a while and after having a reel die on me a fortnight ago, it was time to break out the new reel, spooled with 20lb mono.

I had it on a 8ft boat rod, so not big but I thought it would be fine.

Last weekend had us down south for a day, and it took two rods and my lure kit. First cast with a brand new Plug was going to go hundred miles out. Lifted the bail, rod over the shoulder then flicked it forward. SNAP.....there goes my lure with a few meters of line. The line bird caged and snapped at the reed. Insert expletive.

Walked back to the car to get another lure. Undid the birdcage, re ran the line, lured up and cast. Got about 15m out then had a mass of tangles.

I pulled out 20m of line and cut it off. Re tied the lure and finally got a good cast in, then another, then another, then SNAP as my lure heads out to the horizon. Dummy spit time, and no more fishing.

After not being a huge fan of throwing $10 buck notes into the water, I went back to sponsors store and picked up a smaller egg beater,. Total spend was $130 mark, including 4 new plugs. I had it spooled in store with 15lb Fishing WA Xtreme braid. First cast and trawl with a popper. Put the boat into gear and look back to see my line waving in the breeze. Lucky the popper floated and I went back to get it. And 15 or so mtrs of line....

After changing setup and rod, I had no problems, until yesterday.

First cast with a plug on. Snap! Fu$&. Fu$&. Fu$&.

I started having a close look at the braid, and sporadically there are furry bits in the line and you can easily snap it. I was unspooling line from the reel finding shitty spots and snapping them by hand. By now, the deck of the boats looks like a yellow spider was trying to create a web.

i found a good piece offline and cast out again for yet another snap and the spat the dummy.

For some reason the iPad went blank one text screen hence finishing the post here.

The question I have is: Is FWA Xtreme just shit line? And would you trust pre- spooled lines?

The truth is that I have head less failures on my Ben 10 alien force 4ft rod than I have had with more expensive setup's in the last fortnight.

Check your guides on the rod

Check that you don't have a crack in one of your guides on the rod you are using , this can cause the braid to break during a cast . This might not be the cause but its worth checking.

Thanks Vis, I will check that, though the mono was breaking just above the spool, and the braid was coming off the spool all chafed up.

the other to check is the roller on the arm i've had the same and the screw that holds the roller on the bail arm backed off and the line was running between the gap

Had a good look on the reel

Had a good look on the reel and rod and played 'fish on' in the backyard ( tie the line to a tree and run around things) couldn't see any more chafed braid. Hopefully it was just a few shitty bits at the end of the spool.

Still a bit peeved about throwing new lures away though.

I guess I will find out when I hook something up.

Mono does go off if left for

Mono does go off if left for a period of time like a year as you indicated

and the fishing wa is low quality braid and you get what you pay for
I don't know how much that braid costs but theres a lot better braids on the market

It's def the shitty line, I've used a cheap line on my bream rod think it was 6lb and every few casts it would snap or birds best big time, I then found out its because the line doesn't go on very good, also if you have a cheap reel it doesn't lay the line very good and just cuts in and then busts off

so could be something to do with a cheap reel, line or both

Found with an old reel that the roller on the bail arm, if rusted, can Frey the line and snap. If that is what has happend with your reel you might aswell chuck it out or keep it for parts. I wouldn't blame it on the line if I were you.
