Skill Going Out of Fishing

Watched bit recorded from the show the was on Channel 31 the other day .There was a bloke catching snapper ,4 x rods, drop baits to the bottom and wait untill fish hooks itself[using circle hooks, high tec rods, braid lines colour sounder,Gps ,you name it]then all he does is set the hook and wind it up.No skill needed for that.

Quite a few years back couple of mates and I came across a braid type of line with no stretch in it compaired to mono lines lines--100-150lb for hand lines. You could feel the bite and sink the hook without yanking up about 20ft of line to take up the stretch before the hooks moved.Other mates saw this and reckoned we were using unsporting tactics.Mind you,the braid was approx 1-1 1/2mm diameter
Then came small paper sounders[took all the fun out of putting dripping on the sinker and extra bare hooks on to see what type of sand and weed you were on.A good mate inherited some charts from his grandfather [ex pro wet liner for many many years]that had all the info written on them/depths,type of weed, sand, shale rock, and even drawings in a little book of landmarks associated with each spot and sailing times from port[7 knots is all his boat would do]Took a while to wake up to why all the depth readings were wrong compaired to the sounder.Grandfathers fathom was an armspan [tall man]=6 ft 6" while sounder=6ft.
Along came GPS,no more taking sighting of landmarks and timing how long it took to reach the area or using a marker buoy once you found some bottom or got a good bite/fish
Next came the big Alveys and boat rods and so on and so on

Now if you want to sort the men from the boys keep the sounder and Gps but go back to a handline.Nothing like the feel of the line burning your fingers when you have a big sambo on and when your missus asks if you got anything you can show off the line burns when describing how you got them.

An interesting read

That made for an inteesting read - just shows how far we've come. I rmember, my first sounder was a paper one - that's gong back some years and I remember catching a load of very good sized skippy up at Jurien inside reef (wheather was rough) many years ago in my first boat (a Douglas Sabre Runnabout). Yeah, LOL, we were using hand lines and no gloves Wink - I was running out of fingers to put linecuts into. The first line cut hurt - but the second and subsequent (in a previously created line cut) REALLY HURT Yell.

Makes you wonder where we'll be in 10,20,50 years time fishing technology wise.

Maybe it'll be like Seaquest DSV where we have self operating 'drones' that preceed our boat as we head out with high speed light sensitive cameras bult in that feed images back to the bridge, with different alert tones depending on species.

If we get to that stage, I think we might as well have fish species selectable mind control divices Foot in mouth

I too remember my deckie days when we couldnt't find the craypots out deep so we would drop lines to pass the time 'till the pubs opened back on shore. Hooking the reef in a large swell used to really piss me off and create a seriously likely possibility of losing some fingers.

As for today, I like to seriously test the tackle I have invested in. It's part of the art and something I really enjoy.
