Slide baiting is by far the most productive method of land based fishing in my opinion. I use braid with never an issue yet. One thing to note is to take care of your slides, try keep them off the rocks as they can put burs on the ss slide that is in contact with your braid. I dare say it wouldn't take a large bur in the slide to pop braid that is under tension.

Would slidebaiting work at a surf beach and do tides/current affect the bait sliding down the rig

For surf sliding the longer the rod the better. You want as much angle on your line as possible, some people even use 6ft rod holders to gain angle but always put a solid lanyard to your rod anchored to something behind you. I always use circle hooks so i have found that if I leave my rod in a very sturdy rod holder and set a reasonably tight drag, the rod then is able to load up smoothly resulting in a very high hook up rate. I always have a lanyard tied to the rod as i found out very quickly after deploying my first ever slide, You can hook some very solid fish so its best to be safe than crying on the beach rodless. Can't fail using live hezzas but almost any live baits will work from whiting to 6-7kg salmon. Try and use as small hook as possible for the targeted species. A small bait with a big hook in it wont last very long so that is a big factor imo as you want a healthy livie out at all times while fishing. Generally get around an hour out of decent size herring so that's what I try and stick with.

Do deadbaits/fillets work in terms of sliding down the rig

Oh and for the rig i use

Mon, 2017-08-14 11:26

Oh and for the rig i use 80lb braid to 120lb wind on leader connected by a Bimini twist. Tie you're wind on to the swivel on your solid ring and tie a 40-80lb leader directly to the solid ring at a length of around 1-2 metres (too long will make it hard to cast) but a minimum of a metre is best. Tie a decent size sinker on or a breakaway would be the go for beaches with current, cast it out as soon as you get to your spot and let the sinker take hold while you catch your livie. Off the slide it is important to make the leader to your hook shorter than the leader you used for the sinker as if you don't you'll most probably end up with a tangle, if I use a 1m leader to my sinker off my solid the leader to hook would be about 600mm long.

Yes if you have enough angle

Mon, 2017-08-14 12:02

Yes if you have enough angle on your line. To stop the bait being washed in it definitely pays to use a one way slide

steel or ally

Mon, 2017-08-14 13:11

I use a steel tube instead of pvc as 99% of the time i fish off rocks not the beach. You'll understand why i use steel when you hook your first sambo or kingie.

One more thing

Tue, 2017-08-15 08:37

I have a Daiwa 4000c and will most likely be using that as it has a fair bit of capacity and drag. If i was to run mono how much should I have and what poundage i was thinking 100m of 50lb braid then fill rest with 40lb mono

Not sure what specs you're

Tue, 2017-08-15 10:57

Not sure what specs you're reel has as i have never seen one but i use a saragosa 18000 with around 350m of 80lb braid straight to 10-20m of 120lb for the wind on leader and ive been spooled a few times too. Handy to know how to make your own wind ons as i can make them as long as i need. Depends what area/ground/species you are fishing, but i find myself bumping into some serious fish on the slides down here in the south west so I need stopping power, if only I could afford a stella 30...

Daiwa 4000c

Tue, 2017-08-15 12:35

Its one of the very old reels that daiwa made back in the day its a pretty solid reel and thought id use it rathet than just let it sit there to rust away. It holds 300m of 50lb and has atleast 10kg of drag

Tue, 2017-08-15 11:04

Hi mate I've written the article on sliding that's in the current Western Angler and have been doing it for a few years from both beach and rocks. I've tried to cover most specta of it in the article in as much detail as I can to answer the most common questions I always seem to get. Your setup with the 40lb mono topshot sounds like a great setup for beach sliding. If you need any more info send me a message with some questions and I'll be happy to help.
