Slow GPS
Hi Guys
Boats fitted with a 07 Navman 6507. It may be me when working in a small area but it seems to be slow to change degrees when moving, also if I was to head straight today the boat symbol on the screen would be travelling side ways before straighting up. This makes life hard when crossing ground then wanting to return past before doing a drift, makes it hard to line up.
Then when heading home today the unit shut down a few times, this may have been due to a plug working its way loose, once the unit was started again the boat symbol ended on land in the Kwinana suburb some were, we were still behind Garden Island.
When leaving the ramp my old tracks had crossed across the rock wall the previous trip, which never happened as far as i am aware!
Any ideas on this? Power issue through the plug, some settings to adjust or is it on its way out??
Comments most appreciated.

GPS
Depends a great deal on cloud cover, also the currency of your software, if there are updates available, do it. GPS can also be affected by sunspot activity check your reception details page if you have one, you really need more than 4 sats to get good positions.

Has it always done it?
Do you live in Kwinana? May have just had bad sattelite reception like AB1961 said if it was cutting out. I sometimes find when my Lowrance is searching it goes back to my driveway as default if i've had the unit on at home alot. As far as bearing has it always been like that? all units lag by a few seconds seeing as they only tell your heading based on your previous position. Currently driving a workboat with a Northstar(navman), suprisingly i really like the unit but I find the lag on it is terrible.

Cheers
Guys, it was an over cast day so this could have added to the delay which i have incounted before in the winter months.
Dont live in that area but did drive through there as my last trip was out of point perion.
I was looking at upgrading the map but decided against it, i will enquire with north star to see if a check / up date is available in regards to the GPS.

In the setup menu of the gps
In the setup menu of the gps you will be able to set up the gps update time and if you set it to a lower time value the gps will update more frequently which should improve the response when you are zoomed in and working in a small area and it will also speed up the time for the gps to give you your correct heading and the boat symbol to point in the right direction. And if you are using your track lines to get your drift right you can setup your tracks to be updated by time or distance. Your track lines are just made up of a series of gps points joined together. If it is set to recording these points by distance then you wont have your boats true track when you are working in a small area because you wont have travelled that far from the previous and it will look like you cut corners. I would set it to time and the lower timne will give you a more acurate track but there is a limit to how many points can be saved so eventully you will start to erase you old tracks if you run out of memory.
if the plug was the problem on the way home i would say the gps powered down and when it powered up again it needed time to re-aquire the satellites.
If your boat is in the right gps chart position on the jetty and generally everywhere else i would say there is an error in the charts. this use to happen coming around Woodmans point on old charts.

Thanks
Paul s, I will look into these settings for sure and try what you say! Paul I was looking at upgrading the charts as there O7 version. Do you think the updates will be beneficial to me in regards to depth marks and contour lines etc? More detail?
