small toolkit for car
Submitted by HuggyB on Sun, 2009-04-19 15:05
Just going to put together a small toolkit for the trip to Exmouth. Without going way over the top, what do others carry in the way of a small toolkit for general repairs on long trips?
I'm not interested in spare hoses, fanbelts, oil, grease or the like - just basic tools I should have (and possibly others making the trek to Exmouth next week).

Yeah, I used to drive up north a lot and I reckoned that I could deal with anything short of a con rod through the side of the block in my HJ Statesmens. Now I look under the bonnet and I don't know what I am looking at!Even the mobile phones on the Exmouth run aren't a lot of good because you are out of range for such long distances.

I saw a TV advert for an exercise machine today and it was said that just three minutes a day of the machine would give me the body I dream of. How will three minutes a day on an exercise machine give me Miss World?

not so much for car repairs
but trailer, bearing changes if needed etc.....
BTW, I am taking a hire car up there so if it s**ts itself, I'll be on the phone for a new one!

Being a mechanic i pack more than most people i guess...
Ive got a good tool bag which holds a 3/8 socket set, metric spanner roll, hammer, pliers, screwdrivers, shifters, 3/8 torque wrench. It all fits in the bag and doesnt take up much space at all.
As for spares i take 2 spare wheel bearing sets for the trailer, and a set of belts oh and a tube of grease.
Also carry a 4x4 recovery kit with snatch straps, shackles, hand winch, compressor (untill in blew up), tyre repair plug kit, spare pre mix coolant and engine oil too.
The trip I just got back from i almost downgraded but was glad i didnt as we had one of those trips where mostly what could go wrong did go wrong and Im pretty sure every tool in the kit got used at some point.
Good point about the block of wood for the jack, helps alot in the sand, thats the one thing I didnt pack and had to borrow a piece of someone camped down the track to stop the jack burying itself in the sand.
One other thing is i keep a gregorys workshop manual under the passenger seat, not much point having all the gear to do a repair if you dont know what your doing, even mechanics need a manual to work from.
But if your not mechanically inclined a good level RAC membership should pretty much see you right.
