smelly Skippy/ Herring

A few days after the storm and rain deluge a few weeks back, i was fishing the reef system in close to the back of Garden Island.

The water was very dirty looking, a lot of small debri floating in the water.

We caught a few herring, and some nice size skippy, but even while catching them i noticed a different type of smell to the fish....a more stronger almost iodine like smell.

When we were cleaning the fish, the smell was definately noticable.

The fish frames were used recently for crab bait, and to me they still had a funny smell to them.

The fillets are still in the freezer, i am a little reluctent to eat them.

Anybody had a similar experience, or am i being paranoid ??

No you are not alone , been a few posts on here over the years similar , and we have had some ourselves.

We had some ( herring from Cockburn) that had a real kero , slash diesel sniff to them , just out of the blue one day, having caught some around that area before and after with no probs.
This was maybe 10 years ago , and just like that fish kill in Cockburn a year or so the powers to be don't really seem to go out of there way to track/ trace it down.

Not saying yours were industrial pollution , may have been a natural thing , but that debris floating and dirty water from the big flush may be linked.
