Snapper & Great Whites

Went out last night, after my uncle made the news in search of these snapper that were getting chomped by great whites.
Found them, along with 2 great whites. One was about 3m+, the other 5m+.

These two snapper went:

98cm/10.5kg
95cm/9.5kg - Tagged by fisheries. Post details later...

Well may you say god save Shark Bay

Thu, 2011-09-15 17:35

Because nothing will save the breading stock of Cockburn Sound Snapper.

Remember the great mass of snapper that used to inhabit shark bay ?

Why did it collapse lets see, 30 boats =  average two persons per boat = catching bag limit of 2 snapper = 60 prime breading fish = number of eggs laid per fish and lost through the desimation of breading stock YES you are right the answer is ANOTHER SHARK BAY situation.

Hey I like to catch good fish to so don't label me as a tree hugger or what ever just I like to think that having this great fishery on my door step will be around for my grand kids.

You have caught 2 great fish spence I hope you are a thinking fisherman and limit your catch and not go out night after night and repeat the catch like unfortunatly some do.

Fri, 2011-09-16 03:10

FYI mate shark bay is loaded with snapper they are not in shortage there nor are there numbers dwindling fisheries manage it very tightly and the catches are getting better there every year.

take it from an ex pro fisherman i worked on snapper boats in sharkbay for 7 years. if you cant find them then thats your fault dont be a hater

At least 30 boats were out

Fri, 2011-09-16 08:53

At least 30 boats were out there last night... I would guess that on average, each boat last night came home with 2 fish and another 2 fish sharked per boat... so ~120 fish removed from this one area in just one night.......Makes you think why the sharks are attracted to the area.... 30 boats each with about 1-5kg of burley.... recon that'll do it. :)

Awesome fish Spence,  make sure you call fisheries with those tag details.

I'm sure the guy or gal that tagged it would love to know how well the fish has grown. One day I am hoping one of my tagged fish will end up being captured after putting on several kilos.

You are a braver man than me fishing at night with great whites around.

Thanks for the returned Tags

Thanks for the returned Tags Spence.

As for the Snapper spawning they are very close.

The water temp still needs a couple more degrees for the girls to hydrate their eggs (When their ready it looks like a clear liquid with lots of tiny eggs).

Their probably sitting at stage 4 out of 5 in their reproductive cycle.

The boys are ready by the look of a few fish we have caught so far.

Im not surprised at the concern over the stocks as it has taken 11 years and a cut on both Pros and Rec fishos to try to get the low biomass (from the late 90's) back to the existing level.

What I'm still surprised at is why Fisho's always bicker amounst themselves over rules the have been set by Government Departments!

You wont have to worry about stocks soon when they dump thousands of tons of lime stone on their spawning grounds to make way for the Outer Harbour.

I went to a meeting on the Cockburn Sound enviroment Management and the ongoing damage being created by all these dollar grabbing arseholes and there was only 6 people there (Only one Fisho!).Have a look at the impact that is put on a popular fishing hole with the way the Crabs were poorly handled and the Prawns getting black spot with in the Sound. As I write this down have a think of how much waste water the water board has dump into the water you pull your pinkies from recently (swerage and Hyper saline)!!

Dont think that you are the only influence on fish stocks as it could be used against you and a beloved past time!

Dont get me wrong I'm in no way into tree hugging but I do believe in trying to put something back for future generations and alot of effort will need to be putin to protect it for your kids.

When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:

n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or

n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

Usually I can exercise a bit of restraint and just shake my head, but this time - meh.

Mate you're a fine example of everything that's wrong with the human race, thinking that in every place, at all times, we are the dominant species, and have the god given right to do as we please without repercussion. There's nothing special to think about, there is nothing being hidden from you. It's their domain. If you choose ( think about the concept of having a choice to do something, or alternatively not ) to enter their domain then you are at their mercy.

If you absolutely do not want to be taken by a shark, then your choice should be not to enter the water. If you want to go fishing without the risk of having your catch taken by a shark, I suggest you choose to go freshwater fishing. For you to come to the conclusion that you should be killing the shark for doing what it is instinctively programmed to do is idiocy. I'll try and stop short of persecuting you and hope that one day the shoe is on the other foot, and the shark gets to excercise it's discretion ( or lack there of maybe ? ) about who it does or doesn't like in it's back yard.

Its interesting how we as humans have the right to distinguish between what is allowed to be killed and what isn't.

Go do a bit of a search on ecology..

I guess if you think its okay to kill of sharks you probably think its all good to cut down all the trees, polute all the oceans and destroy your own back yard to the point were it will be unlivable. Maybe you should register for the "Tera Nova Trip" befor its too late.

I am certainly not green

And love fishing with a passion. But when do we say enough is enough. I dont know if its just me but from up here in Karratha it does seem that there is more and more sightings of GW, and more attacks. We have made it illrgal to capture these animals and crocs, and numbers are on the rise in both populations.

The question is when is the return off numbers enough to take them off the endangered list. I certainly wouldnt recommend indiscriminate killing off either crocs or sharks and I (after an encounter with a GW) choose not to go in their domain.

Just possing a question. Maybe somebody has some information on the numbers etc.
