Snyderglass rods for Alvey
Submitted by timbo2410 on Sat, 2019-11-02 11:09
Hi all. been in the UK for 12 years and am back in the SW coast again. Disheartened to hear that Snyder are no more but am trying to find a rod the same as their MT8144. I wrote to Wilson Tackle (who had the original blanks), but they emailed and said they didn't have any more. What are people using these days with their Alveys for heavy surf casting/rock fishing? Or is it unfashionable to use the old Alvey (of which I have 3).

Got 2 in the shed had custom
Got 2 in the shed had custom made. Old school rods now. to heavy for the long sessions and alvey reels to slow, only good is line capacity if balloning. theres better lighter rods on the market to use with spin reels.
I'm sure if you look at afew big tackle stores like blue water or complete angler they would may have some blanks that can be made up.

I got a rod rebuilt from a bloke a while back and he had a garage full of old blanks. Might be worth a call if you want to get one built, he might have what you want and didn't charge the world either. Allans rod repairs or something. He had a gumtree ad he was in a unit in double view.

just seemed a shame to get rid of them or not use them. I've still got my 2 Mitchell 499's in pristine condition. Caught a lot of fish over the years with them. Made a brake pad punch to cut new leather brake discs and have plenty of spare parts for them. Also a Penn 850 for the Mrs and a Penn 10500 for me. Have the Snyder 7144 and 8144 for Tailor and Salmon fishing but wanted to get the Alvey hooked up to a couple of heavy rods for night fishing down South. Didn't want to have a custom rod built or get a used one (never know what has happened to them). Someone somewhere must still have them ??

Bind on reel seat
Have a check and see if you can get hold of a bind on reel seat to stick on the 8144 to get you by until you can get another rod just for the alvey.
I have Butterworths, 9144, 8144 and an 8132 and wouldn't think of parting with them. All are over 40yrs old and 2 have been refitted twice

hi and thanks to everybody
hi and thanks to everybody that responded .. I would like to go down the more permanent route of finding a low mount MT8144 (preferably a Snyder blank) rather than rebuild or fit a second reel mount to an existing rod if at all possible. Surely there are still equivelant rods out there .. just need to find a supplier ..will try and follow up leads on gumtree though and see where that takes me ..:-)

Ive got a mt7144 low mount two piece snyderglass fish striker you can have for free. I dont think its ever been used but it will need to be rebound as its been sitting around for the last 20 odd years. Only thing is its in Exmouth.

arrrrrggghhhh so near and so
arrrrrggghhhh so near and so far .. i was also hoping for an 8 wrap .. i use a 7 wrap for baitcasting and up to about 40oz sinkers then I change to the 8 wrap for anything heavier .. i was aiming to use the Alveys to keep a heavier line for heavier fishing rather than have the Mitchels/Penns with spare spools and replacing line .. sigh
