So how about a fishwrecked squid comp?

Theres been a fair few squid lately, and this time of year can be great for it. Obviously the calimari classic is looming and there was mention about non-metro entries and/or making it a photo comp instead. The photo comp for the exi comp worked well I think (both the method and the after BBQ, :p).

So why not a Fishwrecked squid comp? (Was there one before?).

I'm thinking we could do it with photos (and nametag) for longest squid like the fishwrecked exi comp, then organise a few BBQ's/after drinks. Would be open to everyone (not just metro) but maybe have metro/non-metro categories to make it a bit fairer :p. Have a BBQ/meetup in Perth, and Karratha/exi/down south/etc. Not sure we could match the classic in terms of prizes, but i'm sure we could get a few squid jigs/egi gear (particularly if theres a nominal entry fee, say $5). Would be mostly a fun/social thing, plus a good chance to meet up with a few people afterwards. Maybe even get someone technically minded to set up a cam link up to the non-metro BBQ's. Squid teleconferencing, lol

I think we should have a prize to best ink shot photo, and maybe best photo too?

So how about it?

Throw in Gero and Dongara. Will be in that as long as these bloody swells get under 3 metres. Clarity is a huge issue!!

Well, anyone in WA would be able to enter the actual comp, but any BBQ's/gettogethers/pissups would depend on whether you can pool together the numbers.

Great idea Matt. I know there

Great idea Matt. I know there would be heaps of FW crew down in the SW that would be up for it.

Should have a section for town vs town vs north metro vs south metro. Don't know how you would work it. Maybe best average size of the largest squid in 5 boats from one area.

Wouldn't need a prize for it. It would just be bragging rights for the year.

I figure any prizes would be

Tue, 2011-05-17 12:34

I figure any prizes would be pretty nominal, as thats not the main point. Mostly a social/fun/bragging thing. But who would complain about at least winning a squid jig or similar :p.

I think have three sections: Metro, South, North, and then have an overall individual, and perhaps an overall area. So, if you get the biggest in the metro, you would get a prize/award/bragging rights for that ;). Then the overall biggest could get one too. Makes it fairer for those in the metro that might not have the non-metro monsters, but also allows non-metro people to compete. Splits for boat/LB too.

So say:

1) Best metro bag/size
2) Best south bag/size
3) Best north bag/size
4) Best 'region'
5) Biggest overall
6) Best ink shot
7) Best photo

The best region would just be a bragging rights prize, and then you would combine the best 3 (bags/size) from each reason then compare for the 3 regions.

I think if going bag, it doesnt need to be a big bag (too hard, and too many pics), so perhaps just 3. Gives more chance to those who find a few good ones instead of lots of little ones too (dont see the point in encouraging everyone to keep 10 just to win). Could also have biggest individual for each reason but it starts ballooning out the categories (but would be ok if 50+ people involved). Same with LB options. Gotta balance number of people with how you break the categories down.

If there are any CPBA members on here

Tue, 2011-05-17 13:22

could ask or approach (via email or letter) the Commodore/Club Manager or Fishing Manager of the Sports Fishing section, if the after party/weigh in be held at the Club, good bbq/tiolets/weigh in facilities. Have recipticale membership with other clubs.  But with the license no BYO in licensed areas, club prices for booze.  The club has held AAA Fishing championships over the years with nice sandwiches, pies, sauage rolls and pasties for food, at reasonable prices, while waiting for weigh in results.

Personally think it would be a fatastic event with north/south of the river Clubs (also non club members) getting together good sporting comp.,

North/South of the river people can come down, sleep the night before, breakie in the morning, then off for the Squid comp.

Just a thought to throw in the think tank at the moment.  The above can be planned with a bit of notice if all parties agree, as a full Club member can bring in 5 visitors, either in boat or upstairs in club rooms (can't comment on how many boats with comp, that would be up to the Management Committee)

As I said just a thought as I'm a associate member of a full member, old fart.

ps.............still have vacancies for full membership if anybody interested.

'good bye

Tue, 2011-05-17 13:52

We are currently working on an online format for a Perth and maybe state wide fish comp.  I won't say too much more as we are still working out the details, but a few of the things you have mentioned Hlokk are what we've been factoring in.  I need to sort out a few site things as well before it can get underway, but it is likely there will be a new section that we will create purely for fishwrecked online photo comp's.

Out of interest for squid, would you do it by measuring hood size?  I would think bag weight and different scales would cause potential conflicts?

Probably only if there was serious prizes

Tue, 2011-05-17 14:09

But I get were you are coming from. Might even slip a sinker or 2 into my bag!! LOL.

Matt I think its a great idea, and each area can have their administrator. Well done Brucesta for nominating himself for Kcity and Damps.

But also as Matt said keep it fun/social and not serious, perhaps small prize but big Bullsh@t bragging rites. Weights is easier than mantle size to measure, and with a "Administrator" that should lesson any arguements. Come to think off it, perhaps not Brucesta up here!!! Bugger may cheat.LOL

Hope the boats fixed soon or I might have to bum a ride with Brucesta, Mullows, Daisy etc.

Neels

Certainly an online format

Tue, 2011-05-17 14:25

Certainly an online format and more organised comp would be great! Might not hurt to have a less well organised one in the mean time though ;)  But, of course, our benevolent overlord Emperor Gallash has final say :p  Could be a good 'beta' test ;)
(is that "'good bye" subject line a "no, sorry, wont happen"?)

Considering the format of the comp, it would just be hood length. Weights might be easier in some ways, but introduces a other problems if not at official weigh stations. Similar to the FW exi comp. Only token prizes and this site only would decrease the chances of problems arising (gets a lot harder the bigger it is and the more serious prizes are). Just keep it simple/social/fun. Theres other squid comps for people who want to get serious ;)

I'd be more for mantle size,

Tue, 2011-05-17 14:48

I'd be more for mantle size, turn the squid around so the back is to the back of the brag mat and like before one pic of the overall squid, one up close of the measurement and if we really needed it one with the angler. Keep it as social and simple as possible, perhaps tally up your 3-5 biggest lengths, weight it hard as i don't have good scales but i can probably get some. Also timing is another thing as i am going 2 on 2 off for the next two months.

And come on Neels i aint no cheat or are you feeling the pressure already haha!

small prizes and small catch numbers too, well if you want more go for it.

LOL mate

I think the pressure might be starting to tell and we are just thinking about something. If this goes ahead would be a good reason/excuse to have a FW Karratha get together. Bout time as the last one was Xmas 2yrs ago.

Changed my mind now, go the mantle size.

I was involved in two squids

Tue, 2011-05-17 17:15

I was involved in two squids comps last weekend put on by other local forums,,the first gave the option of taking photos and submitted them on a thread or turning up at the BBQ and getting them measured,if you turned up at the BBQ in person you won a Glaidator egi rod and did not need to submit photos, the online section had a first prize of two squid jigs (Gancraft) but everybody turned up anyway,,

With the online section of fishing comps at yakfishwest we get a code the night before and this goes next to your measuring device/brag mat and needs to be in the photo,,this stops people submitting squid from 2 years ago or last month etc, normally the code and then your user name goes on a peice of paper for instance INKY-SHORTY.

The biggest problem is half the people might not be able to post photos up or like me i can't get them up even tho i use to be able until a few months ago.

I figured pics would be by email (or transferring at BBQ, or showing camera). Lot of options, dont necessarily need to upload to FW for each and every one (just notable ones, or general pics from the day)
