Been covered a million times, but short answer is - Furuno 620
When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:
n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or
n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

Shop around in perth and ull
Shop around in perth and ull pick one up for $1000, much smarter choice then buying from over seas. Here u get warranty, help setting up and installing unit and info on useing the unit and dont have to stress out while waiting for ur unit hopeing nothing happens to it in transit all for an extra $100.

If your chasing just a stand alone sounder, the Lowrance HDS5x is little ripper for under $800 or you can go for a furuno FCV620 if you want theyre around the $1100 mark with transducer. PM if you want a good price. The HDS7 is more of a combo. and thats more around the $1900 mark with chart.

i purchased a lowrance
i purchased a lowrance sounder / plotter from the states and got it ok.....
but they forgot to send the navionics card that came with it, 10 weeks later and i'm still waiting for the card, hopefully sorted now and on it's way.
they are quick to reply to your messages when you are organising to buy a product, but all of a sudden when there is a problem they can't find the reply button on their emails anymore.
though all up i got the bundle nearly half the price i would have if i purchased it locally.
