sounder screen scratches

Does anyone know if theres a product that can help eliminate some of the scratches that the screens can get from cleaning them, i have a few very fine swirl marks that i would like to hopefully remove?

I guess this leads to the question

what are the screens made from and what is the recommended method of cleaning.  After use at home I first swipe with a soft cloth to remove any salt spray residue and then spray with lense cleaner that you use for cleaning glasses and wipe with a tissue.  On the briny though it's a different matter and it's often a wipe with whatever is cleanest, which on most occasions isn't.

i think youll find that your units are water proof for the most part .. i rinse mine with warm water when i get home if its really bad . while on the water i dripo water out of my water bottle onto the screen and clean off with a micro weave cloth that sits in my sunglasses case (adn clean the glasses the same way)  .. you could try lcd screen cleaner once you get home as thats a gel that should cover in the sratches. i use a belkin pruduct but only because i sell it .. any lcd t.v. screen cleaner should work fine and when used with the mirco fibre cloth it comes with you should never scratch it again.

if your mainly cleaning

if your mainly cleaning finger prints off the screen, your doing something wrong as the buttons for the unit are on the right of the screen , unless its a touch screen. i generally use just a soft cloth for wiping the screen as its only dust , there is a product i have seen that might work. its a disk repair liquid that repairs scratches in cd's. could work on the sounder too if they are only small

Carefull

I have a fcv585 furuno unit and while it is an excellent sounder it scratches very easily.

I have resorted to a microfibre cloth - but only after i have removed the salt crystals off the screen with a soft and light mist spray from a spray bottle full of water.

While out on the water i just resort to a light spray very occasionally - furuno did change the front cover on my unit after it was fogging up but they tell me its a sealed unit and shouldn't have any drama with such a small amount of spray.

As for ridding your screen of scratches - maybe enquire with the dealer of the unit and ask if they could suss out a repair option through their supplier?

aha!

my fcv620 had a few scratches on it, and i thought i would try and buff them out with the microfibre cloth that comes with the unit.

with a bit of water, the more i buffed, the less the scratches became, until there were no more scratches. bewdy i thought, until i realised i had actually buffed off the protective "glare" covering on the screen!

turns out there is a thin covering on the screen, that reduces glare and reflection of the sun ( i guess a bit like a polarizing cover ). over time, a little salt and a wipe every now and then, had put small scratches in what i thought was the actual screen.

The unit still works fine, and is still clearly readable, however it is harder to read from the back of the boat, and does reflect the sun when it shines on it.

thats exactly what i did, cept when they replaced the original screen on my unit(and i must say the service at taylor marine was outstanding) i learnt from doing it the first time - now i just have to watch out for crew touching the screen when they feel like pointing out fish marks!!!

amazing that such a brilliant unit is so delicate - my raymarine screen i could clean anyway i chose and it wont mark but is obviously a diff material.

I have often wondered if their is a cover like a contact laminate - like you used to put on school books, that you could stick on the screen to protect it.

any ideas?

Screen scratches

Yeh your right, especially furuno have that protective coating and lowrance too. From  day one i use that special cloth that comes with it and windex. If your on the boat and you get that haze of salt on the screen drizzle some fresh water over it to wash the salt off and use that cloth again then when you get home use windex ,after the salt is off though. Works a treat!

Screen protector

Wed, 2010-07-28 07:41

I had; and left ;a clear screen protector on one of my handheld GPS units (Magellan) and it has destroyed the screen. Almost like the adhesive has been absorbed by the screen.... .

Unit was a cheap one anyway, but screen cover came from manufacturer from new.
