Speargun Question

Total newbie to spearguns, is there a model of speargun that has a interchangeable head to a head like  a handspear type instead of the single, only chasing stuff like flatties, whiting.

spear head

It all depends on what sort of spear shaft you get.  Generally there are either hawiian type shafts (where the spear itself is sharpened to a point and one or two floppers added) or threaded shafts (where you screw on a spear-head of choice).  Obviously with a threaded shaft you can use any type of spearhead from a pranger through to a slip-tip for big stuff.  Just be aware however that they do spin off if you dont regularly check them (or put a drop of lock-tite on them).  You should be able to get both types of shafts for most makes of speargun.

Hopefully they have something for under $200 with the changeable head only going to be in 2 metre water max, most of the target fish is in 1 metre of water.

flatties and whiting, just get a gidgee. user friendly, and your less likely to do damage to the fish, and yourself.

Have been using gidgees but loading the rubber spooks the flatties quite easily and the crappy rubber broke only after 3-4 uses, who knows might end up getting a replacement band but wouldnt hurt to check out a speargun if its a better alternative.

easy cuz,

making new bands is a peice-o-piss. plenty of demos on youtube, and you can customize to suit your style, ie - make it as powerful as you can handle.

only reason i reccomended the gidgee, is spearshafts and guns are pri$ey, and a speargun could recoil if you discharge into solid surface ie - the ground.

it may not be that hard to make your own head for a gidgee, using the existing head.

undersea phantom

If your chasing a gun under $200 the undersea phantom would be a good option. Far from a top of the line gun but it has just been redisgned with a railgun barrel but the head is the old design and not of a typical railgun. I used to use one back in the day for the same thing, shooting KG's in shallow water. it has a threaded spearshaft and you can get 3 prong heads or 6 prong. i found from the 3 prong was much better for accuracy as the 6 dropped too much, 3 prong was more than sufficient for holding onto KG's and flatties and such. First started out with a gidgee stepped up to a gun for a bit better range.

Nice, saw a few on youtube and looks like i might give the DIY hawaiin sling a go and use the old gidgee poles, now just need to find a place that sells that surgical tubing or will spear gun tubing work the same?

Cheers.
