Spinning rod for Quobba
Submitted by TorquenFish on Tue, 2013-08-20 09:22
Hi all,
Just wanting a little advice on purchasing a new spinning rod for rock fishing for mackies and the like a Quobba?
Tossing up between these two;
Penn Prevail 9' 12-20lb (mono) cast weight 85g rod , or
Pen Prevail 10'' 15-30lb (mono) cast weight 130g rod
Will be casting 70-80g metals and white lead head jigs. My question I guess is, will the benefit of 12-20lb lighter rod be better for casting all day than the heaver rod outweigh the loss in line weight capacity?
Will be using 50lb braid on either rod on with a Penn 7500 or Penn 8500 real to match.
Cheers,
Jesse.

I have the prevail 9ft
I have the prevail 9ft matched with a stradic 5000 for throwing metals etc from the beach. Very happy with the rod, casts a mile and it's not tiring at all using it for long stretches. I'm only using 15lb braid so with a step up to 50lb mono maybe the 10ft might be better suited.

I recantly bought the prevail 10' for my trip to Dirk Hartog and it was great. Paired with a stradic 8000 running pe3 boat braid (40lb). Could cast 40-80g metals and stickbaits a mile. Very light rod ad it won't tire you out casting all day. If be going the 10' for sure as I think you will feel the 9' to be too light for what you're wanting.

Cheers for the feedback lads! Was leaning towards the heavier rod but just wanted to make sure that I was going to be able to cast it all day for 5 days straight!

Can't help you much here,
Can't help you much here, but my Sabre was built for fishing there, can't get these any more, but a Sabre GF220 8-10kg was brilliant for fishing up there.
cheers
Dale.

10ft Prevail
I was up there in May with a 10ft Prevail, it was matched with a saragossa and 50lb braid. You will find it fine, not a problem

Shimano terez medium,
Shimano terez medium, medium-heavy.
I have the medium with a okuma salina 16000s, medium heavy with diawa saltist 6500H. The medium heavy mounted with saltist pretty much stops most fish, except for the tiger sharks at garths

Agree with Chris demon blood
Agree with Chris demon blood 9'6 was great I didn't find it to be too light at all, i could xast it all day no problem at all, had it pairs with a saltiest 4500 and a thin 40 lb braid which I have landed tuna up to 35 kg oI no ppro penn spin fishers arnt designed for braid they don't have a cross spool layout so the braid buries in itself and reduces your casting distance, casting distance is paparamount
the main things I would co sided are a rod and reel that match each other and are well weighted
deffinatly a graphite rod you want it to be llight
thin diameter braid equals longer casting distance and higher line capacity
