Spooled
Had my 10 ft with 30lb braid and my rod was in a holder on the rocks turned around to role a smoke and turned back and my line was slack as blowing on the rocks so i winded it in a bit then it just took off i stood up trying to tighten the drag had no chance the head shakes on it nearly pulled me in the water!
Was using yellow tail on a set off gangies

Well obviously could have only been a few different things... a whale.... an oversized blowie... or a foreign submarine.

I fish there almost every weekend lol, that is your fishing the same spot
From the sounds of things, the line being slack and as you wound in, it took off. I would place my money on an eagle ray. Almost all the big ones I get there do the same thing.
Not sure about the head shakes tho. I have heard of people getting samson fish there, never personally seen them caught tho. Possibly a shark, but I dont reckon you would have had any slack in the line to start with if it was one.
Other alternative, is it could have been a mulloway. but often they will slowly run with the bait before actually swallowing it, which doesnt explain the slack in the line.
My best bet is an eagle ray. they go pretty hard, and when hooked take off for the hills lol

The slack line is the fish
The slack line is the fish picking the bait up and swimming toward the beach. Could have been anything. If the headshakes were sort of quick I rekon it was a mulla. Had mullas do this to me before.

Could have been anything. But given the spot, its more than likely an eagle ray. I catch them there almost every weekend at the same spot

Sure thing Carnarvonite, the hammers sure do fight well. Not sure about a hammer in 2m of water and a pretty docile beach tho

Too Easy
It was firstly an eagle ray and then a hammerhead ate it and headed west. Hammerheads just luv rays.

eagle rays always get people
eagle rays always get people thinking head shakes even myself sometimes stupid bloody wings and a decent eagle ray would definitley spool somone easy but never know as you didnt see it if it was me i would definitely say it was a eagle ray because i would much rather lose one of them than a bloody good fish

Nothing worse than watching
Nothing worse than watching your line go out into the distance waiting for that nasty "ping" as your line all gone

the way i see it is the line
the way i see it is the line went slack , which means something sucking or chewing on the bait. it could have been a ray but with the big headshakes i would say its possible to have been a big mulla or even a big pinkie. with a ray you would feel surges of power from it flapping its wings not the head shakes you described.

?
but when a ray is going the wings hit the line giving a head shake feel. i honestly dont beleive a mulloway or pink could spool you on 30lb . my call is ray but could have been shark

30pound braid would have
30pound braid would have killed any eagle ray anyday of the week same goes for any shark under 2metres, unless you had 100metres of line, possibility it was that shark that was spotted the otherday haha my money is on a big ray

Im not so sure if the line class matters
Because it didnt snap as far as I am aware. Just spooled him. The drag matters more. A decent balanced outfit for 30lb should account for most rays, but I have seen a smoking reel before with locked up drag and still spooled by unknown deamons of the sea.
So I have no clue.
