Just wondering with all these great squid being caught lately has anyone got some tips
for a newcomer ie how deep, what ground to look for, best time of day etc
I have access to a boat and all the gear but never actually caught one!
I love eating them and would like to try my hand at catching a feed.
cheers

It all changes =) I've
It all changes =)
I've got em deeper in the river, say to 6m, but I usually aim for about 2-3m in the sound.
They go hard dawn and dusk, but you can usually manage a feed during the rest of the day.

Early morning and later arvo
Early morning and later arvo to night, during the day they seem to go deeper water. best bet is to look for sandy patchs and weed beds around the area when you on your dinghy 2-3 metres of water is a safe bet. just note squid are colour blind so picking a jig to suit is more a personal preference.

But colour can affect
But colour can affect contrast. E.g. Dark vs light. Also, the amount of light reflected can vary according to depth and light (e.g. sunny/overcast/dusk).
So, the jig colour can make a difference (even if they cant see the actual colour, just the brightness/contrast vs the surroundings). If you had the same greyscale equivalent in say a pink a green and a yellow, it might not make much difference though (but its hard to tell what the greyscale equivalent will be- it might just be that your yellow jig is the right shade for example, or whatever)

i find most productive to present your jigs a meter or so off ..
the bottom so depending on your depth and drift you'll need to select a suitably weighted jig.

all of the above is
all of the above is correct.
i read alot of articles in magizines and have heaps of print outs about squidding and one thing that sticks out is depth from 1 to 10 metres.
if you have a range of sizes and colours change until you find where there holding and drift around there. you might go to a spot one day where say orange 3.0 and 3.5 pinks are working the best and u bagged out but then you go again the day after and they will only hit the blue or green or brown in the 2.5 or smaller. they change there minds and you should have jigs to suit.
keep your jigs as close to the bottom as possible because thats where they sit.
hope this helps. if not my best advice would go on google and google squidding techniques, egiing and look at the links. there is alot of information out there and most of it will help you out.
good quality jigs are also important.

Went squidding with a mate, 4.30 - 5.30 pm in the bay last week, i had a pinky brown jig with a triangle of ab shell stuck on. My mate had a bright green jig, no shell. It was overcast and bloody cold
Me 6, mate 2
And the shell was smahed. All were caught just off the bottom in 10 mtrs

braid is very important,
braid is very important, deffs get your jig as close to the bottom as possible, try and keep your leader as light as possible (8lb is good) as squid have exellent eye sight. Look for weed patches, Cockburn sound has plenty of this.

i personally have never gone
i personally have never gone wrong with pink emeraldis jig every time i go out. Its my lucky jig and i dont change it over for that reason haha. Have caught squid on very thick mono line before but not ideal. Look for the weed patches in between the sand patches. Usually go squidin in th 5 to 8 metre depth range and morning or evening 5-9 best times but have caught plenty durin the day aswell.

i sit 3 jigs on rods hanging
i sit 3 jigs on rods hanging over the side of the boat..all different colors..rocking of the boat does the jigging for me..i just sit back watch the depth and wait..have a coffee and chill..they say squid sit in one place..it's fun when all 3 go off..if the squid dont wanna bite but u can see they having a look i put a bit of tuna oil on my jig and that normally does the trik..
