Squid heads for bait?

With a lot of squid being caught lately, what do you guys do with the heads and legs? Bait? I always keep mine but usually just use the legs for whiting and stuff.

Just wondering if anyone uses the head with legs on as a big bait for dhuies or snapper? I've tried them before but never caught anything. Someone show me a pic of a fish they've caught on a squid head!

Heads for bait on dhuies

Sun, 2011-05-15 19:43

Heads for bait on dhuies snapper, baldies and the like rock. They are probly the best bait for bottom bouncing as there tough enough to hang on but still soft for the fish to suck them in. Ive got like 30+ heads sitting in my freezer for bait some time.

Not huge

Sun, 2011-05-15 19:58

Not a big Dhu , but this one took a whole squid head in June last year.

I dont use a whole head all the time, but i had caught a few undersize snapper so i put a bigger bait on to try for something of size.

Didnt get a big snapper but was happy with the Dhu..

So... bit of a mixed response

So... bit of a mixed response there then. Rarely use bait for big fish these days anyway but may drop a squid head down sometime in the future.

Im not even sure why this is a question.

I would have autonatically thought superb bait. Certainly up here any demersal go nuts over a squid head, and the bigger the better.

Caught reds, rankins, trout and every snapper up here wolf them down. I find if there has to be a trick present it as natural as possible, ie dont worm it on the hook. I personally just hook into the head and out, and if there is something to half hitch to over the top do that. This way the bait looks natural and man is it supreme up here.

I've caught a few dhuies on

Mon, 2011-05-16 09:57

I've caught a few dhuies on squid heads, and just recently nailed a 3.5 kg snapper on one.

If the fish are biting, then send one down.  I use a snelled rig, big hook through the top of head, and the bottom hook freballing with the tentacles

Now that sounds like something to try

Mon, 2011-05-16 10:05

Might just pinch this one and give it a try. Sounds clever, and might place the bottom snell through the thickest tenticle.

You never stop learning in this capper.

Makes sense

I have a few Lacunas and other Octa like jigs, and now its easy to see the stinger idea.

Cheers

Mulloway, pinkys and gummys

Mon, 2011-05-16 10:31

Mulloway, pinkys and gummys seem to love them.

Beach, rocks or boat, doesn't matter. Fantastic bait.

As I found out last night, big stinkin rays love them too...damn finger burning, line spooling things...

snapper lollies

Mon, 2011-05-16 10:55

A lot of people believe that snapper will go a mulie/scalie/blue mack over anything but a well presented squid on a snell floated back in the burley trail will nail a large amount of fish, especially pink eyes.

Just my opinion tho
