Squidding - Geograph Bay over Christmas

Hi All,

Going south over christmas - plan to do a bit of squidding from the runabout.

Anyone got any tips or is it the wrong time of the year?

Cheers in advance for any insight.

Best time of year down there

Best time of year down there usually seems to be September or about a month after the last of the winters dirty brown water clears up.

In saying that you can get them all year round just you might not get as many so quickly or as large, but still pretty easy to get a feed for the family.

If launching from Port Geo, Vasse, or Quindalup, pretty much head out anywhere, find some weed stop the boat and drift with squid jigs out the back. Vary the colours and sizes to see what's working best on the day. Don't be afraid to try quiet shallow for squid(1m deep) or if nothings happening in shallow head to some deeper weed beds(8-10m). I usually like to start around the 3-5m deep mark.

I have always found dawn and the morning to be most productive, but the arvo can be good too. I have never done that good in the middle of the day for getting lots of them, but you will still get them.

I am quite lazy when going for them down there and usually just throw a few handlines over with squid jigs on them then leave them on the floor, when they move, squid on :-)

Have fun down there and good luck with the squid. Good to have a whiting rig handy too, in case you drift over a sand patch. Drop it over and you might nab yourself some KG's or Sand Whiting.

 exactly what Buz said, I

exactly what Buz said, I think some people get a bit caught up on fancy rods and jigs for squid.

I have an old cheap rod for squidding and just leave it in the rod holder and a handline the same as Buz with 20lb line on it while drifting for whiting, nearly always get a good feed.

I will be down there this

I will be down there this weekend with the jetski, should be some squid around. I find if they are real aggressive like when they attack a fish on the end of your line then they will take anything. I've caught heaps on $2.50 jigs and you don't feel as bad if you lose one. I'll be fishing for squid in about 3m first to get bait for big KGW. Yum!

also what's the weed like down there on the beaches and on the Newton beach boat ramp?

ramp at Abbey is OK but it has been chocas with sand since winter.

With a ski you'll be fine but last weekend I had to put the hubs in to get my 17ft Ali out and I also witnessed some poor bastard have to get snatched out.

Pretty disappointing considering the $ spent.

Yeah I know what you mean. When i was down there 6 months ago the ramp and jetty was just put in and there was a sh!t load of weed which made it impossible to use the blooy ramp.

Thanks for the info
