Submitted by Justin Poole on Mon, 2010-04-12 22:02
Can any one advise me on what to use to seel the joint on the flange of the fuel sender unit on my stainless steel 90 litre fuel tank.
It is getting water in through this joint I think I used gasket goo there after I got it welded up last year, The gasket goo must be eaten away by the petrol as i Keep finding black sedement in the fuel bowl,

if your boat is left outside
if your boat is left outside with mainly empty tank then you will get condensation in it .. this might be your cause. or just shitty fuel ?

What was welded.
Did you get a new sender flange welded onto the tank? My old school traing says use no sealant, but go and buy a new gasket for under the sender. If you put a sealant on the surface with the gasket, the gasket will tend to squash out, fit it dry. The other thing is, the surface area between the sender, and the flange is there plenty of sealing area, or is the hole where the transmitter goes been opened up, so the sealing areas have been reduced.
Has the surface of the flange been distorted, or scratched? Also do you have a "Swan neck" bend in the breather line? water could be getting in there.

Metholated spirit
If it's not a lot of water add a bottle of metho to your tank
it makes the water blend with the fuel without causing any problems, I add 1 every time I change the water seperator/filter

I use a product called Fuel
I use a product called Fuel Set. Have been for 4 years in current boat and about 3 years in previous boat.
Add a cap full every time I fill up tank.
Have had no problems and it seems to work.

Gasket
As iana says use a dry gasket. If you cannot buy another one pay a visit to you local garage and see if they have some thick sheet gasket material and cut one out or some insertion rubber sheeting.
What ever you do,do not use silicon sealant, what squeezes out when fitting the unit drops in to the tank and forms in to little balls just big enough to cause no end of fuel blockages.
