Starter Motor Winch

I am guessing this topic has been raised 1000 times, But I don't care I am bringing it up again.
I am building a starter motor winch using a Gear Reduction Toyota Camry starter motor, trouble is I don't know the rpm.
What size pulleys are you blokes using if you have something similar? Would like a fairly quick retrieve rate.

Cheers

Toyota manual says "Most

Toyota manual says "Most engines require a cranking speed of about 200 rpm". So roughly about that.

There was a good thread on this on Ausfish

This link takes you to page 3, not much real info before that. They talk about different kinds of starters, and ratios to use.

I'll measure mine today, once it's all done you won't go back to a hand winch again!

Weel on the winch is 300mm

Wed, 2017-02-22 08:37

Weel on the winch is 300mm attached to the 1:5 ratio

wheel on the starter motor is 30mm

pulls the boat up pretty quick (7-9 seconds) and doesn't struggle on the steeper ramps, I have a quintrex 490 that would weigh in about a 1T when going back on the trailer... I use a 120 amp trip out switch as a isolator that works fine, anything smaller Can't handle the load...

i also pulled the manual winch apart and turned the shaft around for the 3:1 ratio, I can now use the manual handle for the 3:1 with the flywheel still in place as the manual handle is on the opisate side of the flywheel...

300mm

I have got a 300mm diameter pulley on a VP commodore starter motor. It has been on 3 boats and it now pulls up a 6m glass boat with ease and quickly.

I have got 25mm cables suppling it which is a big factor in how they perform.

Ford starter motor and fly wheel

Wed, 2017-02-22 05:18

I didn't bother going to the expense of pulleys and vee belts. Just used the starter motor and the fly wheel of an old ford falcon, welded the fly wheel to the shaft on the hand winch, then set up the starter motor so that the gear on the starter engages the fly wheel when energised. This pulls my 6m quinine up from what ever ramp in 16 seconds flat. I use the same size electric cable that is used for batteries and a heavy amp trip switch (forgot size) and have had this setup for 6 years with no trouble. Total cost $25-00 for cable and a slab of beer for starter motor and fly wheel.

G'dayI had one of these on

Wed, 2017-02-22 13:59

 G'day

I had one of these on our last boat, a mate had built a few before and I just assisted here and there.  Bought a new V8 ford starter off ebay and a mazda (I think) flywheel from a wreckers (sorry - automotive dismantler).  My main input though is the switch.  Mate told me to go to an auto parts store and get a hella motor bike brake light switch (from memory), this was attached to a pull string and to the trailer so you could pull on it straight away when you connect the cable.  I left it long enough to walk back and keep it going as I went.  Keeps you away a bit for a while.

A set of ear plugs are handy as well, they are VERY NOISY but very good

Cheers
