Starting a boat with dead batteries

Was interested to know if the batteries are dead flat on the boat are you still able to pull start the engine (mines a 90hp)?

I've heard you can also overide the automatic timing on the engine aswell so that it idles faster avoiding the engine stalling in the case of an emergency.

True?

should be able to pull start it but wouldnt want to try, mines a 90 too reckon it would just about kill me with the effort. Check under the cowling, I have a rip cord stored in mine there for emergencies

With either a 2 or 4 stroke, you should be able to slowly pull it over until it's past "top dead center", which is the hardest compression stroke.

Then re-wrap your rpoe around the spindle and give the big girl one hard, but smooth yank. If no good, out comes a plug, in goes the old aero start, replace plug and lead and into it!

New Merc 90's need the primer bulb pumped till quite hard, and someone pushing the key in while pulling over, it direct injects fuel into the cylinder for starting (they love the juice on a cold start).

Cheers Jason

jimbo, its worth giving it ago in the drive way just to make sure you can start it.knowing the proccedure before hand will come in handy when it happens on the water.

I have pull started mine both when cold and warm and warm was first pull easy , cold was 2nd pull nearly as easy.

Best thing is to try ot in a controlled enviroment before in an emergency situation.

I also have changed a Tyre on a rim , used my hi lift jack as a winch and other off road or on water stuff before I have to do it in a real situation, I see so many people when they get in strife they pull out their brand new recovery gear and don't know how to use it .

Only thing I havn't really tried is to untangle a rope etc underwater with goggles on .
