Steep Point
Submitted by Wheatbelt_Boy. on Wed, 2013-04-03 10:53
Steep Point was very average in terms of fishing across the easter weekend, no sign of anything big except for the sharks, which seemed regular on the line. A mate got in a 3m Bronzie, and were plentiful numbers of Long Tom that were good bait, however sharks also loved them. Plenty of Snapper about and Spangleds but no sign of any macks from spinning and balloning. Few small mully about. Could anyone shed some light on the performance of this once world renound land based area?

What was the weather like while you were up there?
I have found that the mackeral like the dark blue clear water. If you get a few days of easterlies pushing green murky water out of the bay and past the point, then the mackeral head out into the deep water and fishing at the point goes dead.
Someone else might be able to add a better explanation.

Yeah fully hasn't produced great nights for me either. Not terrible but always better on any other moon phase.

I was up there end of Feb and we took home 80kg of filleted mack (between 4 of us).
We took ~20kg from the rocks, the biggest issue we had was getting sharked all the time... we were getting hook ups.
Had a 12ft dinghy that we took on top of the trailer, in that we confortably landed the remainder of out quota just trolling around on the fault lines (we'd go as far as 2/3 way to Dirk). The fish are there... just seems it is getting hard to land them off the rocks.

I went to the one closer to the river mouth called kalbarri sports I think. The bloke in there was dishing up some horrible jokes. No sign of any tailor which made me flat as all hell. Blue holes looked promising though.

Wheatbelt_Boy... were you there with three other mates ???
I was up there at the same time (the 2 camper trailers) the water was definitely a bit too green, a bloke on Denham also said the water temp dropped several degrees that week sending all the Mackie's out deeper

Haven't tried Quobba yet but
Haven't tried Quobba yet but its on the list.
You would be interested to know that, that 'other' bloke that was there at the same time. When they left they left rubbish all over the cliff, and where they were camped, they decided to bag up most of their rubbish then leave the bags shuved under the bush...
We managed to get hold of Pam (Rangers wife) who managed to get Paul to meet them as they drove out past the house.. He made them come back and pick up all their cr@p - they definitely weren't happy about that.
On our way out we stopped in for a chat and told him all about them, especially them trying to catch sharks using jerry cans, Paul wasn't happy, and I suspect that bloke might find it hard to get a permit to go back again :)

It was over Easter, it was a foreign bloke and his girlfriend and a mate. They were in a dark Prado with minimal camping gear.
And it wasn't their first trip there, they were they end of last year also (according to Paul)

Coral spawn
The drop in catches could have been a result of the coral spawning round about that time. Bottom fish activity usually shuts down for a week or two straight after spawning occurs.

It's interesting you say that
It's interesting you say that because a couple of months ago, there was masses of coral spawn all around Rotto and our usually very reliable spots shut down completely. There was heaps of sharks around too.
