STEEP POINT FULL REPORT. lots and lots of pictures
Ok well ive finaly been through all the cameras and got all the photos together and its time to throw up the photos of our trip.
My brother Aron, mates Michael and Rene and myself spent 2 weeks at steep point and this trip the focus was on looking outside the box both fishing and diving and try and figure the place out properly. i think we well and truly achieved this compared to the guys around us just bait fishing the cliffs and ballooling and spinning.
first few days we had a massive front come through with strong westerly winds and huge swells still managed to dive and fish the shallows for a few fish. few days past and the wind changed dirrection and out went a balloon. picked up a little macky ballooing on the 20lb setup for my brother and his first spanish.
swell finaly dropped off and it was on we did a lot of exploring and traveled around the point diving and fishing all over the place for a lot of different species. figured out the shark macks on the light 4-15lb gear and bottom bashed with the same combos using both bait and lures off the cliffs, figured out the shallows after dark for pinkys and emperors and dived the shallows with the boat when the winds allowed. between 4 of us we ended up filling 2 engels with about 50kg of fillets of 5 star fish from rankin cod to baldchin and had a ball along the way.
will take to long to go through all the details so ill write up some of the better moments and let the photos exlain the rest.
my brothers horse sharkey on 15lb that would of gone close to 7kg off the cliffs, my 67cm pinky on 12lb, nice pinky on soft plastic and 12lb, Arons pinky on 4lb and plastic, shark macks on 4lb off the cliffs, my first cobia on plastic from between 2 manta rays, Michaels spango diving in 4m of water, huge tailor on lures, my first coral trout from deep in a cave in 4m of water and thats just a handfull of the better ones.
enjoy.

Ummmm, rusty wire leader on white placcy hahaha. Killed it fellas.
I am, as I've said, merely competent. But in an age of incompetence, that makes me extraordinary.

nah not rusty just roughed
nah not rusty just roughed up lockweld wire as we where chasing shark macks but my bro let it sink to far and this pinky grabbed it, 4lb line and 1000 size reel off the cliffs around heavy reef would put that fish as one of the best efforts off the trip.

fair few others up there
fair few others up there found it fairly hard but we worked hard for our results so fairs fair i say haha. noahs and the cod we figured out a way to fix them so they never bothered us, tied 20m of rope off to the rocks and tied fish frames to the other end and let them play tug of war against the cliffs, soon enough they learnt not to bother touching anything close to the cliffs haha had 5 fish sharked and 6 fish eaten by the cods in 2 weeks up there.

What species of shaark
What type of shark is that, the dorsal fin seems to me to be very big for the length of the shark.
Or is it the camera angle.

sandbar whalers, very large dorsal and pec fins and a light colour compared to the usual dusky whalers that everyone normaly gets to see up there.

It's hard to fish, hard to
It's hard to fish, hard to fish out because of its isolation and weather doesn't allow much access a lot of the time either. But in saying that I've heard so so many stories of people spending a week up there and getting nothing, I did my research and took my time figuring it out and put a lot of effort into this trip so reward for effort certainly payed off.

Light gear, great to see.
It is really good to see somebody using light gear. I have about 35 trips to Steep under my belt and still laugh at people who turn up with 24Kg gear and 40Kg braid. Massive reels and heavy rods means about 10 minutes spinning before your knackered. Light rods and small, quality reels makes for so much more fun.
Great job on the report and a good variety of photo's always helps.
Good luck on your next outing.

Amazing trip, great report.
Thanks for the post. Great fish, a credit to you all. Couldn't help feel a twinge of envy at the nice gear you use, I grew up loaning my dad's Shakespeare Black Queen. Good in its day, but horrible and soft sloppy in reality.

Great fishing and heaps off species. That Bigeye trevor is one off the pretiest fish, and great fun on light gear.
