steep point lures

i know this topic has been done before...

i have a heap of mackbaits allready

anyone know who stocks the nillsmaster invincibles

i want to get x-raps not sure on the size though the sxr 14 is about 40 grams which seems a bit light i dont want to spend too much on lures i wont get the distance required with.

i plan on taking plenty of metals with me i love the halco gold twistys one of my favoutrite lures for mackies

any other lures you guys can suggest

is it worth fishing with softies i know a mate of mine did well on the big white grubs

most of the lures i have are around the 80 gram mark can probably still cast 60 far enough but i have not been up there so not sure i know you lose a bit of distance when casting from a high platform.

cheers

steep

Tue, 2012-09-18 06:15

Hey Dan give campbells protackle or oceanside a call I have bought nilsmasters from both shops previously, they are very good lures for steep.

also try fluro bombers.  Rapalas also good but a bit more expensive especially if the sharks are hungery.  Halco max are good too and cast a mile

what rods are you taking for this?

soft plastics will work but the long toms and small macks etc will rip them to shreds so take heaps.

take some 85g raiders also

give me a call if you want to discuss anything, if you get stuck I have a bulk load on nilsmasters/rapalas/bombers etc I can lend/sell ya

I have the same combo for

Tue, 2012-09-18 09:16

I have the same combo for spinning Quobba and I think the 962H is best suited to 60-65 gram metals, they will cast out of sight and not too taxing physicaly if you are spinning for hours. It will also do 85g and down to 40g without a problem. I only use metals if there is bait/fish feeding on the surface, if not I use 1.5 oz jig heads with a #7 long shank hook, 6" Mcarthy paddle tails or Gulps.

The Saltist 4500H is near perfect for rock spinning, strong, fast ratio, good drag and not expensive so a few scratches won't worry you too much. The only problem with mine is that the line roller bushes wear out, I have to pack it with silicone grease to keep it smooth. I think there is a bearing uprade kit for them but I not sure where to get them.

yer go the twistys and the raiders for distance the cliffes are quite far from the water.
also take some soft plackies and i light spin stick and go for a walk along the beach. its chockers with flathead and small golden trevs and the pinkys are on the bite at night time too if ya wanna hit the beach but check size limmits, there diferent inside the island compared to the open water. theres also a heap of whiting in the shallows if your keen on flicking some small poppers for something diferent.

Make sure you pick up some

Tue, 2012-09-18 08:50

Make sure you pick up some Rapala sx14's they were dynamite for macks when I went up there last time. The bombers and halco max's worked quite well too but the x raps where the pick of the lures for mackeral anyway.

test

Tue, 2012-09-18 09:42

you probably need to test how far you can chuck those hardbodys with that rod, bearing in mind you will be 5-10m off the water and the wind behind you.  Basically if your not getting out far enough you wont catch anywhere near as many fish its a long way to go to realise your rod wont really do what you want.  which rod are you throwing poppers with around gero?

for bottom bashing a penn850 will do.  I use a saltiga 600GT on full lock

 the demon blood casts sxr14s

Tue, 2012-09-18 12:30

the demon blood casts sxr14s very nicely. not as far as metals, for obvious reasons, but it makes things easier on you! not tooooo taxing either.

I used that exact same combo

Tue, 2012-09-18 10:18

I used that exact same combo up there and had no problem getting the sx14's and bombers a fair way out. Hooked plenty of macks too, pity about the sharks.....

I'll be kayak fishing steep in April next year so starting to stock up :)

Halco max?

Tue, 2012-09-18 12:47

Halco max?

Doing a bit of research myself and these seem to fit the bill...130mm and 80g.
They're a bibless sinking lure which cost around the $13-$16 mark.

Has anyone got any feedback on these? They look like a good alternative to the more expensive Duel Adagios/Maria heavy hard bodies..

Steep Point

Tue, 2012-09-18 12:53

anyone know who stocks the nillsmaster invincibles

We stock them in 12cm & 15cm

i plan on taking plenty of metals with me i love the halco gold twistys one of my favoutrite lures for mackies

Yes the Halco Twistys up to 70gm and the Raiders/Knights 85gm are good for distance especially with onshore winds.

any other lures you guys can suggest

The Sea Iron Pelacus is ideal up there and the 84gm (112gm if the rod can cast it)

The Clone stickbaits are very durable and weighted so you get a descent cast. Ideally the 2 & 3 oz sizes and they are well priced.

is it worth fishing with softies i know a mate of mine did well on the big white grubs

They have there place up there and the new Z-Man grubs are ideal as they dont get chewed but sharp teeth like others as the material is the same as Snapback/stretchy stuff.

most of the lures i have are around the 80 gram mark can probably still cast 60 far enough but i have not been up there so not sure i know you lose a bit of distance when casting from a high platform.

You do loose distance but having the right outfit and lure will help maximise your distance.

what about wax wings?

Tue, 2012-09-18 15:14

I have only tried the 68mm size but the action is really good- the larger one would be worth a crack considering its 118mm and they have good weight to them too 45 grams, I know salmon like to eat em and would think macks would eat the wax...

Tue, 2012-09-18 16:09

they are more difficult to work them, when you are up at a higher level than water level. They still work, but not as well in my opinion and experience.

Wax wings are shit if your

Tue, 2012-09-18 16:15

Wax wings are shit if your spinning from a high ledge , you have to be at or near water level otherwise they dont swim properly they just pop out of the water . Imo you cant beat 85 gram knights also mackbaits and sx14s, have also had success jigging demersal jigs and pelaticus sea irons along the bottom.

Great advice here, rig is on

Great advice here, rig is on the money.

WHITE LEADHEADS!!! If the water is green let them sink to the bottom then race them up then let sink again, will often hit on the drop, also rip em in at full speed.
