Steep Point Lures/Bait/Tackle?

Hey Guys,
I have a trip to steep point planned in a few weeks time. We will be shore based only.
Was wondering what sort of lures are best to take (poppers, jigs etc)?
is it worth taking Soft plastics?
What kind of rod (was planning on 10ft beach rod and maybe a smaller flick rod)?
Any advise appreciated.

Hi mate
A big group of us go each year and we almost all do the same thing these days.
Lures - 4 and 5 inch mack baits, halco max and rapala xrap sx14 almost entirely. I always try something different each year but the mates who stick to these catch the fish. These are all easy to cast, wind in all day and stay in the water up to the cliffs.
Rods - mostly 9ft and 10ft rods. Plenty out there that will work, mack baits/max's are about 80g, rapalas 45g so that is a good guide re cast weigt. A stronger rods help lifting the head at gaff time but otherwise fighting doesn't need to be too strong. Quite a few of us copied a mate with a Pflueger crank which is better than my more expensive rods up there, so have a look at them.
Other lures are good for when you get bored, as there is a lot of quiet times, and more for exploring different areas/species.

Nitro rockstar and demon blood
The rockstar is my rod of choice for bottom bashing. For lures, the 9'6" demon blood cast better than any other rod that we took up there.

Also take with you a piece
Also take with you a piece of metal pipe (about 1.5feet is good) tied to a length of rope...
whwn you trying to gaff your fish, have a mate standby with "the spear" to chuck at the sharks / grouper to scare it away till you catch is out of the water
