Stella 2013 vs 2008

well honestly im just  disappointed that the new stella does not live up to expectations!

However Im sufffering from a case of info overload...

I cant decide on whether to get the 2008 model or 2013 model

Im looking at using the reel for popping and stickbaiting.

For me its either a

Stella 2008  10 000 XG with a Studio Ocean Mark 16000 Spool

              or

Stella 2013 14000 XG

gonna load PE 6.

What would you  guys advice me to get?

for me cost is not an issue.

However Im leaning towards the 2008 stella. as the massive free play in the 2013 as well as its staggering weight is putting me off. But i do like the further casting distance and smoother drag of the 2013.

advice??
thks!

oh and do check out the stella 2008 and 2013 reviews on alan hawks website!

I'd go the 2008.I personally don't like the 2013 model cosmetically and Some reviews I've read are a turn off aswell. I've seen the older stella claim a lot of big yellowtail kings and if any fish will put it through hell they will.Go the old model

The other reason to get the new model is that parts are guaranteed to be available for a long time

 From a casting perspective

Thu, 2013-08-01 19:17

From a casting perspective as you will be popping, the fact the free play is the only real major issue which now turns out to be on only some reels, possible the earlier releases and money is no option, you should go the new model. The price difference will not be all that much since you are looking at an aftermarket spool should you get the older model. Not that I think you need that spool for the older 10k but that's another debate!

Haha, what you do is .......

Haha, what you do is ....... Go to the bank, draw out lots of money and blow it....I mean invest it.....in a heap of reels. All personal Stellas between the 3 of us on board tomorrow, and on final count there will be more Stellas than I first thought.....

On the menu tomorrow:
2008 3000FE
2013 4000
2008 4000SWPG x 2
2008 6000SWPG
2013 6000SWPG
2008 8000SWPG x 2
2008 20000SWPG

I am really keen to feel the 2013 models in action.

Should be fun on a range of demersal and sambo jigging. Just gotta fing fish now, unfortunately money can't buy that.....not that any of us have any money left!

That's a solid spread John.

Guess I'll have to bring overhead only tomorrow for some variety on the boat!

When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:

n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or

n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

so far ive felt the only up to the 8k pg sw 2013... perfectly fine to me.... no free play

tho the weight is a real turn off.......

but from what ive heard there is quite far bit of play in the bigger reels.. 14k and up...

is this only for a select few of the bigger reels or is it like this for all the bigger reels?

 I guess for three blokes

Thu, 2013-08-01 21:11

I guess for three blokes that's not too different to me. Between the wife and I we have far too much gear. Two Stella's, a Twinpower SW and FC, A Ryoga Bay Jigger, a Saltiga Expedition just to name a few. What was I thinking!!

Thu, 2013-08-01 21:47

I own a couple of the 08 Stellas, lovely reels. The only thing negative thing I can say about mine is that they develop a very small play in the reel. Hard to describe, but not sure where its coming from. The new one has a new handle set up, maybe to help this. Sold my 08 5000 and got the new one. Used it a couple of times, knocked over a few rays n sharks in the sound trying for snapper. Still feels solid as. Hope to give it a good work out tomorrow.

If u live near curtin uni, u can check out my old 8000 n see what I mean.
Cheers

 hey fisharoo!

thks for the offer but nope i stay no where near there!

perhaps the play developed from the handle? since the 08 handle is two piece?

not an issue for me... coz i will be changing the handle after all!

2008 for sure. Why they changed something that doesn't need changing is beyond me.

Gave the 2013 4000 and 6000PG

Fri, 2013-08-02 20:51

Gave the 2013 4000 and 6000PG a good back to back test against 2008 4000, 6000 and 8000 Pg's on well over 30 sambos today.

The 2013 6000PG is a sweet reel, feels bombproof and more like a PE4 reel. I loved it and at least as good as the 2008 model but has a better drag.

The 2013 4000 is high speed more suited to spinning and not jigging, so it struggled a bit. Was a bit tight brand new but felt solid. The 2008 4000 PG feels a lot nicer for jigging.

Verdict, the 2013 reels are heavier, feel stronger, tighter but not as delicate and free spinning as the 2008 models. If you already have 2008 Stellas, I dont think it is worth upgrading. If you dont have a top end reel and are looking for one, the 2013 Stella will certainly impress.
