Stella fe vs stella sw?
Submitted by trav32 on Tue, 2012-05-22 09:36
I was wondering whether anyone has used each of these reels and can tell us what the main differences are? I understand these reels are graded for two different types of fishing (saltwater or freshwater) but is like to learn more about what are the practical differences? Cheers!

Theres a rather large size
Theres a rather large size difference between the two, so it depends what line you're wanting to fish as to which one would suit better.

The only main difference
like Hlokk said the only main difference between the FE and SW range is sizing and the amount of bearings, and a few other bits and pieces, the FE range starts at a 1000 size and ends in the 4000 size, the SW range starts at a 5000 size and ends in the 20000 size. Both can be used in saltwater environments, i don't think there is a hard and fast rule for freshwater and saltwater uses. The 1000 fe runs 3kgs of drag, 2500 and 3000 run 10kgs drag, the 4000 11 kgs of drag. The 5000 13kgs, the 8000 23kgs, 10000 22kgs, 18000 and 20000 run 25 kgs of drag. and then there is the line capacities for each model, depending on whether you run braid or mono. Hope this helps.
to fish or not to fish...as if there was an option.

Well, they're different reel
Well, they're different reel designs, so a few other differences than size. Which one you go for will more depend on your purpose than anything else. You're not going to go breaming with a SW or chasing sails with a FE. Quite a size jump between the 4000 and the 5000 too.

What??? are you
What??? are you serious...you're not supposed to chase sails with a FE???? I use my 2500Fe to chase sambos and does a great job......ha ha ha ha ha. Of course it depends on what the use is for, but i was just trying to give a comparison for the chap. If only we had JDM stuff come into Aus it would be a different fishing world...they have soooo much more gear than what is brought into this country...but i like to support local business rather than overseas. Keeps the money here and keeps the local guys employed.

Well, generally.... though I tend to chuck my certate 2000 at some fish larger than I really should.... haha. Perhaps I should change it from sails to doggies or marlin or something though.
As for the local re import thing, remember that they're here to serve you, not the other way around. After all, you're paying them ;) If they dont stock what you want, let them know. Some local guys may be able to get stuff in for you if you ask them. My talicas are the single speeds which dont normally seem available, but managed to get Brody get them in for me via the fishing shop.

Cheers guys, I thought there
Cheers guys, I thought there must be some more subtle differences to do with the different gradings like freshwater and saltwater but it's all pretty elementary really! Which model is newer? I know the fe has x-ship which ive heard is great. Can anyone recommend recommend one over the other irrespective of fishing application? Haha

Figure what you want it to do
Figure what you want it to do first ;) Always pick the right tool for the job, not the best tool for any job. No point having the worlds finest chisel if you need to screw something in or hammer something.

Haha, 3 votes hlokk for "analogy of the day" again. Mate you are on fire, a couple of days running!
Don't suppose you could make one up about having a hot lady in bed and needing a chisel? (was gonna go screwdriver or hammer but resisted the urge)
:)

What size SW would you go if you were looking to kayak out big baits for sharks?

What size sharks are we talking? My first thought would be an 8000SW-PG.

If you get the JDM model you
If you get the JDM model you can get a SW4000PG/XG... so there is a slight overlap between the FE and SW models. Has anyone compared the two 4000's side-by-side? Any major differences in size? I notice that the line capacity is the same on both models (270m of PE2).
Trav, the SW is a 2008 model and the FE is a 2010 model. Don't let that influence your decision though (just because it's newer doesn't mean it's better suited for your purpose).

just the average whaler size
just the average whaler size i suppose is mostly whats caught around the south. would the 8000 have enough line capacity if i run the bait out say 2-5 hundred metres or so off shore? Id like to be safe than sorry, say if a fat shark took the bait.

Ok well that changes things a bit... If you want to run the bait up to 500m offshore I'd get a SW20000 and maybe run PE4 (60lb) or something... reel is overkill for average whalers but you'll need the capacity.
Edit: I'm starting to think that the Stella's possibly not the right reel for this application... maybe you should be looking at something else. Overhead maybe?

think about it this way if u wanna go and spent money like that just for sharks and you paddle all your baits out do wat i did and get an okuma 50w. fits about 1600m of 80lb and a 10m 200lb wind on. and if your going to say thats to mutch line it's better safe then sorry ;)
