Sad to HEAR
Something seriously going on here. Whatever it is/was is still killing.
LOL. I would have prefered if the Pinks was "deaf", but suspect the "f" was hit on the keyboard next to the "d".

Wonder about the legalities
Wonder about the legalities about coming to the beach with a boat full of dead pinkies for 'research' purposes?
Just a joke....but seriously...

Cray bait
I asked the same question (more or less) on this forum the other day and no one knew for sure how you would stand.
What I asked was what would happen if you collect them for cray bait.
From what I've seen and read it wouldn't take long to collect 10 or so for cray bait, no one can come up with an answer (yet) of what killed them or if it could infect crays.

Wonder what fisheries would do
But I would hope that if you called the above Parties in the current situation "you would have legs to stand on". Who in their right minds would eat dying fish from Coburn Sound now anyway.
I can tell you - not me. Whatever killed these fish killed them fast. From reports so far most appear to have just fed and had food in their bellies. Now thats fast. Hardly any nasty snake kills that quick

Putting two and two
Putting two and two together... if these fish are being found dead with full bellies after having recently fed could it potentially be some sort of toxicity in their primary food source? And since its mainly pinkies does anyone know if crustaceans/corals can have a buildup of toxins due to some sort of environmental phenomena?
All speculation of course but the discussion cant hurt.

Crabs
Spoke with recfish and they said divers reported dead crabs and prawns a week ago!! But today there were a but load of dead fish on the surface. Also the bloke said that if u find a live pinky that's looks like it's affected and u grab it to give to them all u have to do is tell the fisheries that it's for them

Badly Wrong
something is going on that is badly wrong. I'm still not sure if it is man made or not. Would have a thought there would have been a lot more coverage of this. If the kill continues it could take along time to rebuild from this . Anybody squidding around that area ?

This is
This is whole situation in Cockburn Sound is ridiculous. No real response from the authorities monitoring our waters.
No response from either ministers of fisheries or environmental control and monitoring.
It took approximately 4 to 5 days for anyone to even announce a warning about the possibility of pollution in the water ways around Cockburn Sound.
I can only speculate on the information available as to what has caused this devastation to our fishing future
As a recreational angler, I am subject to many laws, regulations and fees to pursue my lifestyle. I have been forced to fight for the right to fish in the beautiful waters of Western Australia.
The Green groups who have tried to lock up the coast of WA from fishing, are now silent when it comes to a huge fish kill of this magnitude. This should be the time when they are vocal and pursue the authorities for answers over such an environmental incident
Once again, the recreational fishing community were the first to respond alerting groups like Recfish and the department of fisheries
If not for Recfishwa, the response would have taken a lot longer in my opinion and without organizations like them, I would hate to see what will happen in the future.
I for one, can only do so much sitting behind the keyboard of a computer. But the one thing I can do, is bombard the emails of the ministers responsible for the welfare of our environment and fisheries of this “once was great state”
Here is the email of our minister for the environment.
The shadow minister for the environment.
Here is the email or our minister or fisheries.
The shadow minister for fisheries.
Please let us get some answers, or at the least let them know, THEY WORK FOR US. And we will not let this be swept under the carpet.

So very well written Grant.
So very well written Grant. Yeah we pay our licences etc for hopefully good managment of our fishery, you have to wonder if people in Fisheries have been told to shut up as there would be some there I'm sure devastated as to what has happened in the sound. After all it's their job to manage the sound at this time of year. And as you say thank god for recfishwest they are the only ones I can see pushing for answers here.
Love the West!

Sending emails to MP's etc is
Sending emails to MP's etc is good but has anybody here bothered to fire a couple of emails off to the major news outlets? I'm not at all tech savvy but I'm sure it couldn't be that hard for someone that knows what they are doing to get some of the pics in these threads, put them in an email & send them off to the TV outlets. I'm sure with evidence of the problem provided they would be quick to jump on the story. No better way to force a government to act than to get it on TV.

If it is a big cover up like
If it is a big cover up like alot suspect the media would have already been ordered to keep quiet, thats why there has been no coverage. Remember the news only tells us what they want us to hear.

Could be right
May be right there Burnzie. Its like having a factory that is integral and important to the wider community/Perth and if they did get fined and couldnt afford what the damages would be or got shutdown it would be more detrimental to the greater good.
Still my view is that it is SHIT and people have the right to know. It could keep happening and then we would have no fishery left at all in the sound. Well could be shite for years after this kill.
We can only say what we feel and wait patiently for further results today.
Just a thought is to get as many as we can down this weekend and have a rally. Chuck on a barbie with some beers then start a good old aussie riot:) Or put some fishing signs etc up in the Botanica bathrooms and get someone to film a couple of us throwing tiolet paper and putting a bin on our head . Now that would make the news baha.

sent this off - too Much ?
Took some extracts from the email above, hope that was ok.???
It is with deep concern and a high level of disappointment that I am writing to you in connection with the tragic death of so much marine life and the potential contamination of Cockburn Sound. The absolute lack of response from all the relevant government departments leaves me absolutely flabbergasted. There was and still is clearly a problem in the Sound, particularly now as our breading stock of snapper are congregating there to spawn. This is of critical importance as it will impact future stocks and yet, your silence on the matter is deafening.
There has been no explanation, no media coverage or general warning to the public. I and fellow recreational fisho’s are disgusted with the way this tragedy in our beautiful fishery in Cockburn sound is being handled.
Where are the environmentalist and Green party members, who so venomously attached the shark baiting and removal campaign, and who crusade so vigorously to create sanctuaries and ban recreational fisho’s? It is ironic that when a tragedy like this occurs, it is the very “ban-able fisho’s” who step up to the plate and through their love and dedication to the sport drive the process to find answers.
It would be really pleasant if our politicians, just for a change, stopped the “Back bench” handshakes, personal agendas and “ego-agreements” and adopted the same “hard working”, “dedicated” “fair play” and “fair go” attitude that I see in fellow Aussies.
We the recreational fishing public look to the Environmental and fisheries departments to manage and protect our fishing stock so that the ocean and everything that lives in it will be there to be enjoyed for many generations to come. I can assure you the public don't feel like this is being handled the way it should be.
While I eagerly await a response, I doubt it will be informative or beneficial -->

Not picking holes
But, change the word "attached" to "attacked" in the third paragraph.
Very good otherwise. But as we know, unless it suits their purpose we won't hear jack sh*t.

In this day and age you can only cover something up for so long
So easy to spread information (or misinformation). The truth will come out, just hurry the hell up with it so that the boffins can tell us how to fix it and how long it will take.
Then the authorities can work out who pays for what and get on with it.
Cheers,

FISH KILL IN COCKBURN SOUND
With the mysterious kill of hundreds of fish in Cockburn Sound you would think the Government would be giving us constant updates. It’s distressing for anyone to see so many large dead pink snapper and other fish species. It’s appalling the Barnett Government hasn’t given an update since Monday.
It seems that pollution is the most likely cause of the deaths, yet recreational fishers are being told not to deliver dead fish to the Department of Fisheries, even though samples and marked locations could help track down the source of the pollution.
WA Labor calls on the government to present the facts and not let evidence get diluted with the passage of each tide.

....shadow minister is quick to get his two cents in and bash the "real" government, which I suppose is better than nothing, but still no response from the ones that actually matter...

Front page spread
The local paper in Rockingham/Kwinana has a big front page spread on the deaths, sadly no new news just making everyone aware of what is happening in the sound and what a tragedy it is.
You can bet the local fishing tackle businesses are right "miffed" about the slow reaction from the government. Again the sounds the green groups and P E W along with what's her name from ECU is deafening.
What a bunch of hypocrite bastards, it appears to me that unless the fish kill is caused by fishermen they don't want to know about it.

Photos of it on the beach suggested that at least a percentage of it floated.

A few dead birds here and
A few dead birds here and there is fairly normal from my experience.
We can't blame every dead creature we see and blame it on whatever has happened in the sound.
Creatures die and wash up all the time with nothing to blame but natures natural selection at work !!
