Fish deaths. Any word?

I'm not on FB and don't read the local, right-wing, edited at a Year 3 level newspaper, nor do I watch the mainstream, cat-up-a-tree/Eagles player-making-a-cup-of-coffee/12 minutes of adverts news, so just wondering if anybody has heard anything?

Recfishwest 27 Nov report....

Tue, 2015-12-01 13:02

Cockburn Fish Kill

No one has done more for Pink Snapper in Cockburn Sound than the recreational fishing sector. Fishers have a strong sense of stewardship over this waterway, these are the community's fish, 'this is like a kick in the guts.'

We, as a recreational fishing community, are upholding our end of the bargain and this a massive let down. There are multiple Government Agencies and regulators involved and it's disappointing that no one can tell us what has happened. It is over a week since the first fish were reported and we are still no closer to finding out what has happened here. It is important that whoever is responsible for this fish kill is held to account.

The Department of Health has given the all clear for swimmers and fishers.

Recfishwest will continue to pursue this issue as best we can.

Wonder

Tue, 2015-12-01 17:06

Would it be worth having a marine science / biology company employed who would be capable of doing such tests on fish / water / radiation, working for the people ( recfishwest) for calling on in the future. I have no idea of the in's and out's of whats involved, eg would they be a sponser or part of a company or just a select few people, but i just thought it would be great to have people that are passionate about fishing as much as we are, doing the research for the people, without having to go to the government. I would happily donate to that cause.

If this was to happen again, who ever these people that do the testing work for they can rest assured they will be paid for their time if they were to leave their normal place of work to give answers for the many people who keep searching. Im sure it wouldn't be hard to scrounge up a weeks wages for a few people. Being seperate to the government can only be a win, presenting the evidence of the findings to whatever the cause might be ( if indeed it is man made ) will make whoever it was weak at the knees.

Just a thought.

It all smells fishy (pun intended)

Tue, 2015-12-01 18:01

The silence is deafening from all government sources. The science people are saying "we have to get fresh sick fish, you know what I mean. Well Fisheries what about getting a boat out on the sound specifically looking for dying fish.

This is one of your core tasks surely, keeping a watchful eye on the health of the breeding bio mass of iconic and highly valuable to businesses fish.

There is a fair bit of coin spent by fishermen in pursuit of these fish when the season is open. Just ask the local petrol station owners, bait shops and fishing tackle stores.

The benefits of a good snapper season are well spread about the commercial sector.

Fisheries should, and in fact, do have a good case to put to the premier for more funding if lack of funds are in fact holding back research into this catastrophe.

Just how an expanse of water can be declared "safe" when the cause for a major fish kill has not been determined is quite beyond me. I'm damn sure my grand kids are not going to be swimming in the sound until a respected body comes up with the answer.

And as for eating anything and that includes the "safe to eat" mussels from the sound, "you must be joking right".
I don't care how health they all look, I'm not that hungry.

Good fellow members and friends of Fishwrecked please keep up with the questioning of your local MPs, shire councils and fishing tackle shops as to just what is happening about an investigation into these deaths and also has the sporing eggs been look at to determine if they have survived.

Do not let this issue slip out of sight.

They don't want us to know !!

Tue, 2015-12-01 19:02

The fact that this has been a very significant and detrimental event for the Cockburn sound fish stock at a time of most importance for the future of the fish due to the breeding season. And during the ban which is in place to protect the fish during this period........... To loose so much marine life in such a short space of time with no answers and no real commitment from the regulating bodies, greenies, scientists, media or ANYONE!! ..... It just seems that who ever is responsible or knows what is going on is just choosing to take the "Ignore it and it will go away" approach.

And if they persist with nothing given......people do eventually give up and move on. I just hope this doesn't happen in this situation.

I think "they" (whoever it is) knows what is causing the deaths and have been consulted by the "Higher" authorities to keep this behind closed doors!!

To say that the waters are now safe to swim in and fish again without knowing the cause would be stupid. They know the cause and believe they can control or prevent it from happening again so that is why they have given the all clear.

They just don't want the general public to know what happened because the ramifications of that would be extremely costly to whoever is responsible. I don't care what anyone says......at the end of the day.....cost for the greedy is the end of the line and certainly takes priority over environment.!

It costs a lot less money to pay and hide the truth than it does to come clean sometimes and I think that has something to do with this terrible situation.

We don't know any facts and we probably won't know any unless someone who does know has a conscience and spills the beans.

Maybe if we find any more dead marine life we should start sending it in post packs to the politicians, greenies, media or whoever else we feel need to step up and bloody do something !!

Just my two cents

Said fisheries are lying. I don't  think so. They can only collect and hand dead fish in. Which they have done. If they don't get feed back its not there fault.( don't often stick up for them:):) must be ill). Seriously someone must know. With technology now days very surprised .

There has been a suggestion in a post above about sending a dead snapper to your local MP (with a brief note asking what is he going to do about it, huh) now with what is washing up you can choose between a dead snapper or a heap of dead blowies.

A few questions to ask yourself,

would you eat mussels that are farmed in the sound,

Would you go or allow your kids to swim in the sound,

Would you eat anything that has been fished out of the sound like squid etc,

If blowies are being killed and I say if, what's next.

Fisheries did a trawl

Thu, 2015-12-03 16:36

I spoke to one of the fisheries the other day and he was on his way out on Tuesday to take part in a trawl for fish, live or dead for more testing to be done from all parts of the water column. Haven't heard anything further.

A very good idea

Tue, 2015-12-01 22:24

That is a very good idea I think, the only thing wrong with is it might mean that one of the head shed may need to venture out of his air conditioned office and go out in the sound.

Generally I think fisheries do a good job of things, this time however I think the boffins (tech o types)are letting the rest of the team down.

As I have said in another post stop sitting around in the office get out and be pro-active, if you want "fresh" samples get out and down to the sound and as little johnny said try and catch some snapper and see if you can detect any early signs of things going wrong, treat this problem with the urgency it deserves for Christ sake

I bet if a dead or sick dolphin turns up in the sound every boat in the fisheries fleet would be running up and down the sound.

The streets would be crowded with tree huggers waving flags and signs, trumpets blowing, drums banging, and all the rest of the paraphernalia they can muster calling for the closure of the sound to everything made by man.

The idea of plonking down a dead snapper and a pile of dead blowies on Mark McGowan's electorate office desk is getting stronger and stronger in me.

If it could be arrange for the TV (any) to be there would be icing on the cake of protesting about inaction by the MP whos electorate this is happening in.

Hmmm I'm going to sleep on this.

Quote from some one who knows what he's on about

Wed, 2015-12-02 07:47

Biosecurity research scientist Dr Michael Snow said the involvement of a pollution event could not be ruled out at this stage, with preliminary laboratory findings suggesting no evidence of algal blooms or disease being a contributing factor.

Fresh mass fish deaths in Cockburn Sound as probe fails to reveal cause

By Jacob Kagi

Map: Perth 6000

The WA Fisheries Minister has admitted authorities are still unsure what caused the death of large numbers of fish in Perth's south, as officials begin to investigate further fatalities.

The Department of Fisheries confirmed late yesterday it was investigating further deaths in the Cockburn Sound area, in addition to the estimated 1,000 fatalities that were first identified in late November.

The most recent deaths, affecting both blowfish and snapper on both sides of the Garden Island causeway and also near the Point Peron boat ramp, led authorities to visit the area yesterday to collect samples for further testing.

The initial deaths, which affected as many as 14 species, ranging from blowfish to squid, have been subject to testing which Fisheries Minister Ken Baston admitted was yet to find a cause.

"Results to date are not conclusive as to a single definitive cause," Mr Baston told Parliament.

"We are seeking expert interpretation of the results, but there is nothing obvious that might explain the cause of the incident."

Shooters and Fishers MP Rick Mazza, who questioned Mr Baston on the deaths in Parliament, said it was vital authorities determined the cause of the problem quickly.

"It's very disappointing that we haven't got to the bottom of the reason why we've had these fish deaths," Mr Mazza said.

"Until we understand what has actually occurred there could be further deaths.

"There have also been concerns raised with me that there could be a knock-on effect to other wildlife that feeds on fish, such as dolphins and seals and also birds."

Mr Baston said on current advice, the area was safe for fishing and other recreation and that seafood from the area was safe for human consumption.

But the Department of Fisheries warned people not to swim in areas that look discoloured or murky or where there are large numbers of dead fish.

COCKBURN SOUND — FISH STOCK LOSSES

1411. Hon DARREN WEST to the Minister for Fisheries:

I refer the death of over 700 fish in Cockburn Sound during the period 19 November to 22 November 2015, inclusive.

(1) Have any further fish deaths been recorded since 22 November; and, if there have been, what are the latest details?

(2) Are preliminary results available from the ChemCentre of samples taken; and, if so, what do these results indicate?

(3) Will the minister table a copy of the results; and, if not, why not?

(4) Is there a temporary ban on fishing and/or other secondary recreation anywhere within Cockburn Sound; and, if yes, what area is covered and how long is the ban in place for?

(5) Is Cockburn Sound currently considered safe for primary recreation activities such as swimming?

Hon KEN BASTON replied:

I thank the honourable member for some notice of this question.

(1) There have been recent reports of new deaths mostly involving blowfish between Mangles Bay and the Causeway. These are being investigated and sampled today.

(2) Yes. We are seeking expert interpretation of these results but there is nothing obvious that might explain the cause of the incident.

(3) Results of summaries of testing will be made available at a future date when testing is complete.

(4) No. Current Department of Health advice is that the waters of the sound are safe for recreation, including fishing. Closures are in place for demersal scalefish, pink snapper and crabs as part of ongoing fisheries management measures.

(5) Yes. Current Department of Health advice is that the waters of the sound are safe for recreation, including fishing.

Question to the minister of defence

Wed, 2015-12-02 11:21

Perhaps some questions should be put in the federal parliament to the minister of defence by the local federal MP.

1. Has the honourable minister been informed of the massive death of fish in the near vicinity of the HMAS Stirling naval base.

2. If the honourable minister has knowledge of this disaster, has she put the question to the head of defence (Navy) to investigate if the Stirling naval base is completely devoid of any blame for such disaster.

3. If the honourable minister doesn't have full knowledge of events which have occurred in Cockburn Sound and caused major fish deaths which are believed to have the potential to effect the native wild life on Garden Island WA will she acquaint herself of the incident and seek assurances from HMAS Stirling that the wild life on GI is safe from the dangers that these dead fish washing up on the shores of the island could pose.

4. Can the head of the navy issue a statement to the media to the effect that the Navy is not in any way responsible for any type of activity that could cause fish kills of this nature.
