Stone fish strikes at Perth beach
Submitted by meglodon on Thu, 2019-01-31 22:54
Have I heard right, ch 7news reporting that a man was stung by a stone fish at a local beach. I can’t say that I have heard of this before, and with a report that a spango has been caught locally who knows what is going to turn up next.
Queenies in the Canning perhaps lol

I would put money on a scorpion fish NOT a stone fish
But let the media put a further nail in the coffin for tourism with their crap ill informed reporting

Sounds about right too
Sounds about right too Sunshine. Surfed Scabs for years and never saw a single rock for a stonefish to camouflage near but catch plenty of scorpionfish over sand.
My cousin got done by one recently on my boat and basically turned into Casper and ended up going to hospital... after the mad prick fished all day with an inch spine embedded in his thumb.
Officially off the Pies bandwagon

We spotted a turtle off the back on five fathom on Sunday so anythings possible. Big one it was too. I thought it was just some weed or something but when it poked its head up there was no doubt.

That was from the end of the 9news bit on it, link below. I was certainly sceptical, too.

Given they are all part of the same family
My money remains on a scorpion fish. Yes have seen lion fish in Cockburn Sound, yes I have seen turtles and actually hit one at close to thirty knots two years ago destroying the outboat just off Garden Island but the odds remain firmly on a common old scorpion fish. Perhaps Glenn can provide his thoughts !

Or a stingray or cobbler?
Or a stingray or cobbler? One bloke got stung diving through a wave? Doesnt sound like somewhere a stonefish would live? Other lady got stung on the top of her foot

Stone fish dont like surf
Stone fish dont like surf and they dont like clear water. If they wereto turn up more likely to be in the river.

Most likely cobbler or even a small ray
As pete f says, they aren't a creature of surf. Nor are scorpion fish, for that matter, preferring to shelter amongst reef.

Saw a stonefish whilst swimming along the Cockburn sound side of the causeway just past the short bridge 18 years ago.

if anyone doesn't know how well these hide..
Actual stonefish, that is, watch the very start of this video. Brodie stirs one up under what looks like the Bundegi ramp. Almost invisible lying next to that tyre, in a little sand gully.

There are several scorpion
There are several scorpion fish species easily confused by those not familiar with true stone fish.
