I had the same problem some time ago

What I found were tiny little holes in the cans that you really couldn't see. I found them by putting the can in warmish water and looking for the air escape. A lot of times, the holes were right on the edge of the top rim. My guess is there was a reaction with the can whilst that sat in water/ice for extended periods, but I'm no scientist.

simple?

i was told never put cans in the freezer, why?

because as the drink freezes/cools the CO2 expands causing it to explode,

might be a minor case of this happening?

orrrr

the drink goes flat

Exploding is one thing that chilled gasses won't do.

It does seem to fall out of solution though because beer that has been frozen is usually flat when opened. Quite unsure why because the seal hasn't been broken and I'd expect that the can would just got back to its previous equilibrium levels for dissolved carbon dioxide.

those frozen cans that you open and are flat are not actually sealled.  the liquid expanded in the freezer causing increased pressure in the can and breaking of the seal (so it still looks closed).  so basically the gas escaped through the break in the seal so it cant move back into the liquid.

the can heated up in the boat over the 2 weeks. on a very hot day the pressure built up in the can to a point where a tiny point in the seal broke.  its likely that the can still looked closed. over the continuing days the expansion of the fluid and gas due to the heat caused the drink to be pushed through the hole in the seal and then the liquid evaporates.

just think of opening a tinnie.  it pops a little at first opening the seal but it still looks closed, and then it cracks open as the remaining seal opens.
i have found one of these "popped" cans before in the morning after a party thinking it was full as it still looked closed. it was depressurised due to someone partially opening it and was half full.

Weird.....

Thu, 2009-12-31 09:05

A similar thing happened to me last weekend. I picked up a carton on the way home for christmas, i got up on boxing day & i found that at least 9 of them were empty on the patio table. I know that it was warm on christmas day & there was a bit of a breeze but surely the atmospherical conditions were not severe enough to cause that type of reaction. Any explanations will be apreciated & taken with a hearty "cheers". lol    Happy new year to all our F/W members & sponsors, be safe & i wish you all the best for 2010.  Rob
