Stupid key wont turn

Hi all,

Got a strange problem with my boat. Although some of the issues may be not enough use, I went to turn over the motor today hoping for a fish tomorrow to find the barrel is jammed and wont turn. The key goes in and out without drama and I've got some INOX in there to free it up if there's a drama inside, but it wont turn. It's as if the "wheel lock" is on like a car would. What is frustrating is I did have it turning over without issue 2.5 weeks ago.

Its a Honda ignition if this helps. It's only 4 years old which makes no sense to me as it's under cover due to hard top.

Any ideas on freeing the lock or a good place to go for a replacement?

Cheers

Neutral

Is it in neutral? They won't crank if it's in gear.

I had the same problem. Gave the controls a jiggle in neutral and away she went. Its got to be something simple like that or maybe the kill switch??

Barrel pin is stuck

Give the end of the key a sharp tap with a light hammer and if the inox has done its work the pin should move and allow the ignition to turn

And if it doesn't turn after a tap with a small hammer give it a big tap with an even bigger hammer.
Not something I would do if it was mine.

What model?

Im not sure about hondas, but are you sure the key barrel is jammed? If you disconnect power to the switch will the key turn in the barrel? A bit late now, but inox and shit in a lock barrel is the worst as it will attract dust which will gum up over time, graphite powder from bunnings or even running a graphite pencil along the key can help and is the right way.  If it turns when disconnected from power then I would be looking at shift shaft adjustment or the neutral safety switch but I dunno if this switch would disable or jam the barrel.  But the idea is to prevent it startingwhen not in neutral.  You didnt say what model, or hp, but it said 200hp in your profile - have a gander here: http://www.boats.net/parts/search/Honda/Outboard%20Engine/2007%20and%20Later/BF200AK0%20LA/SHIFT%20SHAFT/parts.html I think #18 is the neutral switch.

I tried the obvious like above with the hammer and checked it was out of gear by spinning the prop. It wasn't till I gave the throttle a hard jam forward then back into neutral that it worked. Somehow even though the motor was neutral, the ignition thought it wasn't. Tried a few times and all happy days :)

Thanks all
