Submersible led for prawns
Submitted by buddharock on Mon, 2014-05-26 20:16
Hey guys,
going to have a crack at prawns in the swan later this week. I'm trying to source some very bright led lights that are waterproof. Any ideas where I can get these reasonably cheap? Would prefer a store rather than online. Hoping to connect these to some PVC pipe and power with a 12v car battery. Bit wary of connecting to the boat battery.
Any advice welcome. Thanks

If you are going to put them in pvc
Just use some sealed beam headlights.
Silicone them into the pvc and run the wire inside the pipe and then connect to a battery
easy as really

Thanks. Forgot to mention
Thanks. Forgot to mention the PVC is 40mm, not sure that a headlight will fit in that.

LEDS
Recently bought a 4 (2x2) LED pond lights from bunnings for around $50-$60.....work a treat. All wired up in pairs and watertight already.
For set up - I use a length of 20mm ally tube 1.5m long (depending on your boats freeboard), attached 2 lights a side (run wires up the ally tube), slide into a 25mm PVC length (400mm) to form a sleeve with a PVC 'T' piece at top. Fashion a mounting brace out of PVC (i connect to the T, spanned the gunnel width with pipe into a downfacing elbow which i just tie off inside the cockpit), a couple of anderson plugs and your good to go.
remember to:
1. fix a lanyard to the base of the pole to tension (the current puts a lot if pressure on the set up and you get better control with it there as you want to be able to adjust your outwards beam angle.
2. Attach a short (20mm) piece PVC to the top of the T but dont glue it. Drill a hole through both the PVC and the ally tube so you can adjust the vertical height of the lights (i use a crab bait clip for a pin). This can also be used to adjust beam angle as its a tight enough fit in the T not to slip.
3. Change out the packet globes for aftermarket jobbies brightest avaiable (i use 400 lumen jobbies)
Probably woulve been easier to upload a photo but not sure how. Also, worth experimenting with colours as you get better penetration with different colours than others and the white light definitely sends them down quick.
any questions PM me.

Thanks Dogmeat
Thanks Dogmeat,
Spent a bit of time searching for the supplies today and will have a go at rigging them up this afternoon. Pond lights were a great idea. Going to try led and halogen 50w. I'll try and get some pics up of the finished product.

While on this subject
Sorry for hijacking this thread but really just chasing a simple yes or no answer...I'm not asking for any spots or locations! Just wondering if you can actually catch a decent feed of prawns in the Swan River anymore using this lighting technique from your boat? Cheers guys.

Bloody oath. On the best of nights its not uncommon to catch prawns in the 100s. Position is the key though. But you still can get a feed when not in the best of spots.
Remember you cant anchor in the channel and the late rotto ferry and coppers will let you know.

Have made an elbow/90 degree
Have made an elbow/90 degree turn with conduit pipe and another T section that fits over the gunnel. Will fasten this down to something or stick in the rod holders. Hopefully they will work.
