Suggestions for braid

Hi all,

Chasing some advice on braided lines thinking of going with Varivas but it is a huge outlay ($1300 approx for three reels). Looking at spooling a 20000SW used for deep jigging, Torsa 16 used for bottom bouncing, 5000SW used for plastics and baits, any recommendations.

You should be able to spool

Mon, 2010-02-22 09:42

You should be able to spool them up for a lot less than that even using varivas. 1200m you should be able to get for under $500. (varivas10x10 max power). Then from the same place 300m of big one or similar will cost $150 or so.

A cheaper option is to order some saltigaboad braid from the states. It's round, smooth, cheap and comes in big spools. Reasonably thin too I think.

Then would need a separate spool for the light stuff but you wouldn't need more than 300m so lots of options.

two words

Jerry Brown. I'm not sure if you want depth markings or not, so JB might not fit the bill in this regard  (but that would only be the 20000SW anyway).

or

For cheaper Varivas, hunt through a few shops in the states (then you'll be looking at the prices hlokk is quoting).

What PE or poundage are you wanting on each reel?

My prices were based on

My prices were based on plat, so should be able to get better deals elsewhere. I need to order some 10x10max sometime, so would be interested to know where I can get some cheaper. The saltiga braid will still be better value (its still PE6/80lb for example) but I want an unusual size.

High Powered Braids.

Mon, 2010-02-22 14:20

Varivas is overpriced for what it is but agree the higher end PE lines are good. For jigging, popping and offshore extreme fishing Jigging Master have just released a very High Powered PE Japanese multicoloured braid thats called PE Monster.

Quality is awesome BUT, braided lines like this normally sell upto $200 for 300m approx, not this line;

JM Monster PE lines 300m;

PE 4 (300m) - $119 rrp
PE 6 (300m) - $135 rrp
PE 8 (300m) - $139 rrp

** Larger spools (BULK) also available **

Yeah, but PE4 varivas is

Mon, 2010-02-22 14:38

Yeah, but PE4 varivas is 64lb not 50lb Laughing.  That braid does seem to be well priced though (so better value), will have to have a look some time.

I've tried some Saltiga boat

Mon, 2010-02-22 14:57

I've tried some Saltiga boat braid, and recently got my hands on 1800m of PE6 (80lb) for about $225 - or thereabouts.

Very economical, but one thing to keep in mind is that it's actually 0.44mm thick, which I reckon is more like PE7 than PE6. I only managed about 370m on my 20000SW, and 230m on my 10000SW spool. I retrospect, my line lay was sub-optimal and I reckon after adding a few more spacers under the spool I'd probably have managed another 20-30m on my 20000sw spool.

Any diameter info on the JM braid?

JM Braid.

Mon, 2010-02-22 16:08

Top shelf Varivas PE4 has a "max" breaking strain of 64lb but it does average at approx 50lb. It is also 8ply versus JM's 4ply for their PE4. Larger sizes are 8ply.

JM diameter wise, not 100% sure but similar to most upmarket Japanese PE braids as most companys state PE size as a diameter size so to speak.

The first sentence concerns me

If it is accepted that the max breaking strain is 64lb but it does average at approx 50lb that would indicate to me that some may be breaking as low as 36lb when considering a +/- range.  There are of course many permutations to achieve a 50lb average.

is it really worth it?? i

is it really worth it??

i can see for deep jigging you need as much line as poss on your reel but for the  bottom bouncing and plastics you could get away with a lot cheaper braid.

Yes & No

Mon, 2010-02-22 17:02

For jigging, popping and offshore extreme fishing "yes"

Will lower price but still quality braids do the job "yes"

The original question was about  "Chasing some advice on braided lines thinking of going with Varivas but it is a huge outlay" - - is it worth it "no" in our opinion.

With some help from a member I have decided to go with Diawa Saltiga Boat Dendon Style Braid, it seems to tick all the boxes,8 ply, thin, depth indicator colors and a 1800m spool is US$200.00. Thank you for all your input.
