suggestions for a good reasonably priced alround inventory of rods/reels for boat.
Howdy everyone!
Getting my new rig (whittley clearwater 2100 walkaround) next couple of days and looked at my tired old collection of rods and reels made up of budget bibs and bobs and hand-me-downs from over the years.
Have always just made do with my tackle and gear and as a result have fallen behind on fishing techology and methods.
So its time to finally get with the times and start again with some decent fishing gear that will hopefully improve my chances of hooking up more often.
What Id really like is some opinions on what people would do if they had to fitout a boat with rods reels and tackle so that it pretty much covered all the basic fish species we get boating in and around perth and near country regions.
Doesn't have to be top of the wazza brands in fact id prefer experienced comment on what people think does the job just as well as big names for more mortal prices.
Ive always been a fish catches fish man but thats more from ignorance I guess of the alternatives in lures and plastics etc so would love to know if and where I can substitute smelly for shiny.
Minimum config and number of combos would be helpful.
Cheers! Look forward to your ideas!

Fishing out of an 18ft boat,
Fishing out of an 18ft boat, it's all about versatility for me.

I reckon I've caught 50% of all my fish caught from the boat on one rod. That's my "old-school" customised Berkley Dropshot and Stradic 5000 with spare spool. I've had the butt extended so it's a two handed rod now and a spare spool for the stradic means I don't bother tying leaders on when the action's hot. I have the stradic spooled with 20lb braid.
It's a very versatile outfit that I use for:
- catching bait with a sabiki
- float bait snapper
- shallow water drifting
- casting metals at tuna schools
- soft plastics
- trolling a tiny skirt for tuna
You can't get that rod anymore, and most of the modern equivalents are single-handed, which is better for soft plastics, but not as versatile. Something made of high modulus graphite and 6-7ft would do the trick.

40-50lb spin oufit. Go for a quality jigging rod 5-5'6 in length. I find most jigging rods rated PE3 can easily handle much heavier line.
I use this for fishing in water in water 30-65m for jigging, big plastics and Patternoster.

Heavy overhead bottom fishing. I use a Torsa 20 loaded with PE 8 and a stiff jigging style rod. Bottom fishing in 50-150m and heavy jigging.
Aside from trolling, those three outfits will cover just about every base you need. There are outfits that will do a better job at specific functions, but if you're looking to cover as many bases as possible I reckon they're hard to beat. Whilst you're experimenting, keep an eye on the buy/sell board and pick up some quality gear second hand.
