Summer in the swan/canning
Submitted by Hazell on Sat, 2009-10-31 15:20
With summer coming along and boosting river fishing, whats every one getting stuck into?
Ive been getting into the flatties lately around the canning and herring still seem to be around the lower reaches. I have not had a ton of luck with bream lately and have not seen the summer choppers yet.

Definetly give it a shot but I wouldnt bother with plastics right now, most casts I had blowies hitting my hard bodies, i gave up on plastics quick after replacing every cast.

Its a trion rod AND a trion
Its a trion rod AND a trion reel. They are a good little reel for the price, as long as you look after them. I have no problems with fireline or sunline PE on it.
Yeh they are good little rods too, very comforatble to cast all day, light weight. They are quite soft but thats good for some things. Althoguh I havent yet had to muscle a big bluenose out of structure with it (fingers crossed).

you really have to look
you really have to look after the reels because they are very susceptible to corrosion and choking up inside. the first one i bought choked up because i didnt clean it enough, also happened to the second one but managed to fix them, so they both work again.

That is very true, both of my spools have some slight scaling and corrosion after 6 months. They are made for mostly freshwater i think. Ill check out the internals to make sure its not in there too.

Cheers guys, good to hear
Cheers guys, good to hear about the choppers. Yeh they are always a fun catch on ultra light gear.
Hopefully a few bigger ones will be in the mix aswell, Last year I caught and released a few up to 30-35cm in late summer from the lower reaches.

nothin better than flicking
nothin better than flicking lures around under bridges, around snags and waist deep in water on a hot summers day

Great Lizard mate
Can't wait for the weather to finally start warming up so I can try some of my Swan bream spots.

Yeh mate, thats a scorpion
Yeh mate, thats a scorpion 52 in the pic. I like these becasue they are bigger that your average bream/flatty lures so the blowies will not molest them as much.
Pretty much every smallish lure would catch flatties, just try a few different ones until you start catching.
