Sunday Fishing - Mulloway!

Going fishing tomorrow.. Looks like the weathers going to be pretty good and from what i've heard, every man and his dog will be out there..

We are heading wide and might do some trolling and jigging if we can find the big sambo schools that are out there at the moment..

BOM says:
Sunday:  NE winds 8/13 knots tending N/NW'ly late morning before shifting W/SW at 10/15 knots during the afternoon. Seas to 1.0m. Swell 3.0m, easing to 2.0m during the day.

Ocean Outlook
Sunday:
WSW 2.5m 2.0m 2.0m 12 11 11 ENE 8-12kn W 4-8kn SE 4-8kn
Dont really know who to believe, but it should be good to get out there regardless.. Will post some pictures if we get into some..

Tight lines for everyone fishing this weekend.

Gold Day

Sun, 2005-10-23 16:51

We had an absolutely gold day out on the water today.. Will post up some pictures soon and provide a bit of a report..

Heres my first mulloway, caught as a double header with another baby mulloway that was successfully released.. I think every fish I caught today was either a double or tripple header, LOVED IT!

Report of Sundays Catch

Mon, 2005-10-24 13:03

Story goes like this.. Days catch:

16  4kg+ skippy (1 kept) 1 triple header, 2 double headers, 3 on jigs.
3 mulloway (2 kept) 1 baby successfully released when caught as a double header with the big one.
1 samsonfish - 13 kg Released
1 dhufish - 49cm Released
1 shovelnose - Released

Only 1 fish lost under the boat, which looked like a pinky. Stopped fishing just after midday and didn't get to the spot until 7.. Was a magic day, well for me anyhow seeing how most fish wanted to jump on my line.. But i'm well and truly feeling it today, but its a good hurt.. Very Happy

Heaps and heaps of whales and dolphins jumping about all day as well.. MAGIC

Spot

I could try shizz, but i dont fancy my chances.. Its hard enough getting near the captains gps even for my own boat..  He's pretty protective when it comes to his ground, even though more times than not I dont reckon their the spot anyway.. This time he got lucky, only because there were that many boats on it already.. lol..  bout 45kms from hillaries on sunday.

Bad Luck

Tue, 2005-10-25 11:23

Spewing Mate.. Next time your thinking about heading out, make sure you send me a msg or let us know.. We did our first jigging on the weekend and got a few skippy on them.. I was too busy fishing the bottom and didn't give it a real go, but the guys said it was unreal when you felt them hit the jig.

Keen to give it a shot.. The boats getting the outriggers put on it this week.. Going to be a hot FAD's season out there this year.

FAD's

Tue, 2005-10-25 11:41

Yeah mate the jigging is damn good fun, have caught everything on them from dhufish, blue groper, baldies, skippy, sambos etc etc the list goes on. The FAD's are definatly on my to do list this year aswell  so a few missions must be done out that way. Saturday is looking like a good day so now it comes down to where. Two Rocks or off Rotto but that decision will be made later

Awesome

Tue, 2005-10-25 11:45

Yeh, most people I've spoken to say its going to be a golden year out there compared to the ones just past.  Looking foward to it big time.

I've never really tried jigging much and am pretty suprised that you could get those species on them.. Always have a feather jig or lumo squid on but never a knife jig.. Can't wait to get my first fish on one..

I think were heading out Sunday again, weather permitting of course.. But the boat has to be put in for service on thursday because of a niggling engine problem.. And i think i might put my reel in for a service after the beating it took on the weekend..

Let us know if you get out and how you go..

Mulla carcus

Tue, 2005-10-25 18:36

So I hear that the mulloway carcass has been sent off to university for some further study.  Should be interesting to see what these studies conclude when published.

Adam did they provide any indication as to timing of any published results?

Mulloway Research

Wed, 2005-10-26 09:14

I'll be in touch soon with the details of those mulloway that you gave me this
morning. I should be able to get that info to you before the end of the week...

Anyway, I've put together a list of those species that are currently being
studied at Murdoch University and Fisheries WA, along with the contact details
of the principal investigator for each project. Thanks again for showing
interest and hopefully we'll be hearing from you in the near future..

Mulloway Details

Thu, 2005-11-03 18:11

Mulloway #1
Total Length - 634mm
Sex - Male
Gonad Stage - 2 (i.e. Resting Stage - Inactive)

Mulloway #2
Total length - 1016mm
Sex - Female
Gonad Stage - 2

I've got quite a few other otoliths to look at before I section and age the ones that I obtained from your fish, but the approximate ages for mulloway #1 and #2 would be 3 and 7 years, respectively.
