Sunday morning breakfast

Took a work collleague (Kiwi bloke) out for the day.  Abs, squid and a bag of crays for the day.  He has caught his fair share of Paua in NZ, but reckons our sweet little Roes are the best now.

Hmm

Mon, 2011-12-05 11:27

Been doing this for years and have even chatted to fisheries, whilst cooking(a few years ago).  Checking regs now, as I'm sure I'm not in the wrong...but rules might have changed.....again.

Might be my first fisheries misdemeanour, if so, maybe I should be deported.

Site down/pdf stuffed.  Will check tonight.

Yeah but you got the NZer to pose with the evidence, IIRC no shucking at sea!

Tasty looking brekky!

The ab regs state you can't shuck and bring to land.  Nothing about not eating them offshore. I'm guessing it would be the same with eating fish at sea - you can't fillet fish and bring them to shore, but as far as I know there's nothing stopping you from filleting and eating them offshore so long as they're the right size etc.

Take your catch home to clean

Mon, 2011-12-05 13:11

Take your catch home to clean it. Removing

abalone from their shells (shucking) is not

permitted within 200 metres of the high-water

mark so that abalone remains don’t spoil the

beach for others or attract stingrays and other

marine foragers to the area.

Abalone cannot be shucked at sea and must

be left in their shells so their size can be

checked by Department of Fisheries staff.

This is cut and pasted straight from DOF. I am in no way having a go at anyone, but different people have different interpretation's of what they read. I think its very clear , and this is why you should always check the rules for your self . Cheers Grant .

I disagree I read that as you

Mon, 2011-12-05 13:40

I disagree I read that as you cannot shuck at sea so fisheries can check your catch , if you are eating some then those ones consumed cannot be checked by fisheries , I guess as long as you don't come ashore with meat only .......enjoy your breaky mate far too many people getting far too stuck on the minor points of life FFS

i dont boat fish and dont

Mon, 2011-12-05 13:46

i dont boat fish and dont really follow those rules but i would then interpret if you shuck at sea and eat them, and then also take your bag limit to shore, you would of then gone over your bag limit?????, just throwing that one out there, not having a go.... lots of interpretions i reckon, ha good luck folks.

the key part of your comment

Mon, 2011-12-05 13:51

the key part of your comment is "I read that as you cannot shuck at sea". Really, as Grant says, pretty straightforward.

Does suck a bit though, my first thought wasnt that this may be illegal, but more " you lucky bastards". Got my mouth watering

Nice work anyhoo Pete.

Open to interpretation?

Mon, 2011-12-05 20:12

Haha, your a funny fella Alfred....and he was a kiwi!

Yeah, I agree, looks like you can't enjoy a nice feed of fresh abs on your boat....the way I like them.  Must be a newish rule; as said I've cooked them whilst chatting to fisheries.

Oh and of course, 20 caught, 10 cooked and 10 back to shore.

Cheers Pete

When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:

n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or

n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.
