OT: How tall are you? How much do you weigh?

When I was looking for surf
When I was looking for surf rods, they had composites with differing amounts of carbon for different prices. The more carbon, the stiffer, thinner, lighter and more expensive :p.
Got a 12', but with the right lure, I can cast my graphite 9' almost as far as the baited 12' (though it casts a 70g twisty 80m+ for those salmon schools down south at the right time of year).
Also, are you going to use it much down here, or mostly just for the trip?
As for casting distance with bait, have a look at some of those impact sinkers with the clip, or a clip system. You can also make some up yourself by cutting a hook, and tying it to the sinker. Much much better than helicoptering your bait out (and you loose your bait less).

One of the most important issues with surf rod lengths
is helping to keep your line up over the waves. It is no use having a 9 foot rod if there is a four or 5 foot beach break - your line will just be washed into shore on a continuous basis.
You will find when you get to Kalbarri OT that you will normally be facing up to a fairly sizeable swell if you are fishing the beaches at, for example, Wittecarra. So you will need extra height to keep your line up over the waves as much as possible.
That then brings the weight of the rod into calculations. Standing on a beach for hours holding a too heavy rod can become a bit tedious.
Of course all of this changes of you are 7 foot and weigh 100 kg plus OT.
