Suzuki 140/Trailcraft info

Is there anyone here who has a Suzuki 140 on their Trailcraft, Id appreciate some figures.

Ive been thinking about replacing my Yam 115 4s with a Suz 140.

But at the show, I got the often heard story of how the 140 is really only 128hp and the 115 yam is 118. None of the salesmen were able to point to where this has been tested and documented.

The yam is a great motor, well proven but Id love a little more puff with a heavy load.

So Id love to get the figures from a few who have this combination, of the following;

1/ Speed and RPM at WOT

2/ also at (say) 4000 rpm?

thanks in advance!

Have you thought about not

Have you thought about not changing the motor and using a different pitched prop for heavy loads. When I did my last trip to Yampi Sound fully loaded for a week I dropped from a 17" pitch to a 15" pitch. Lost a few knots off the top end speed but picked up out of the hole. Saying that I'm a Yamaha convert, had all sort and will now stick with Yamaha so if I was looking to upgrade I would go a 150 yamaha(thats what I've got) Have a chat with the guys a Chivers Marine, they use to sell the 140hp Johnson(rebadged Suzuki) and the also sell Yamaha and Etecs. Luke or Mike will give you honest info on them all. Wont let anyone else touch my boat!!!

Suzuki

Sun, 2011-10-16 14:39

I just purchased a 5.1 Noble side console with a 115 Suzuki. The 140 is actually 3kg lighter so I could have easily put the 140 on the back.

I chose the 115 because all the research I did said the 140 chewed more juice BUT they were on bigger boats than mine. But at the end of the day I'm happy with the 115 and the motor is a high output motor so I get very good out of hole speed which is needed here in the Kimberley.

Again the dealer I went through just advised to change props as CCC says above. The dealer was very knowledgable and knew a lot about boating conditions here so we settled on the 115. The suzuki gets a 5 year warranty while the Yammie only gets a 4 (well last time I looked).

I've had a 4 yammie on my previous boat and the motor was awesome. The dealer only sold Suzuki/Mercury so I went the Suzuki.

Thus far I've had no issues.

Dont think you can really go wrong with either

mines a 5800 trailblazer, which I believe is very similar to the later 610 TB.

Yeah love the yammy, 7 years old, 350 hrs and runs perfect. Only problem with going to the Yam 150 (other than weight) is that being a much larger engine, they are considerably dearer than the 140 Suz, and a bit thinner on the ground used.

Having a huge fuel tank that I reckon is a little too far back means with a full tank its a little bit of a push to get over the hump. It revs correctly, 5700 WOT from memory.

Would love to borrow a finer pitch to try but as it has a Solas 4 blade, expensive to experiment.

JDI-have you got some figures for your boat handy?

CCC-I think I had a chinwag with those guys, I think it was them telling me the Suz was only 128hp but couldnt say where to find the info published or who documented it.

Also though, I believe the 140 Johnson is a fair bit different to the post 2006 Suz, at that time they did not have the reduction gear setup and hence swing a bigger prop.

Their figure for a 150 Yam was $21.5K as opposed to $16K for a Suz 140.

Incidentally for you guys who have trailys, I found that the rivets holding the soft patch on mine (2003) were rotted away and letting rain water in from above. Lifted the patch and installed a below deck icebox while it was up.

If anyones interested I can put pics up?

Google "suzuki 140 only 128 hp" mixed reviews. As for trailing props, it took four props for me to get the right one. Two were the same size but different manufactures and they gave different performance but same wot rpm . Ccc

yammy 150

Mon, 2011-10-17 21:10

smash i have had a 150 optimax on my rig , this was very economical and plenty of power to use , got rid of it because of noise and vibration, swapped out to the yammy 150 4st   wot 5900 /6000 in good conditions 40 knots , generally i sit on 3300 to 3800 rpm 19 to 24 knots by gps , fuel useage up to 4400 rpm is ,85 to .95 lts per NM  not KMs  over that rev range the consumption starts going the other way

i had a a 575 CC trailly previous with a 115 DI evinrude and had a similar range and speed ,  on both rigs the 2 st was all over the 4st for pick up but i dont tend to do to much water skiing with the Yammy,   i have changed my prop on the yammy which o got through Solas in Osy Park , michael the owner has a lot of good info on what prop to use as i was pushing for a 4 blade but was advised not to ,  he also told me more about the trim on the boat , motor height and fins on motor which iam still adjusting.

i would have thought on the 5.8 the 140 suzi would have been a good mix  i think the 140 is 4 cyl where as the 150 is 6 cyl ??

all traillys have their fuel tank well back , which does alter your trim. mine being C cab was rear end heavy so i pushed the tank 600 mm forward which made a big diference

yeah Id have thought that the 140 would be a great mix, same weight as yam115 and swinging a bigger prop, but its hard to tell who is filling you with sh+t. All the tests on them I have read have been glowing, but opposition tells you they are "lazy", 128hp etc.

The 150's (all the 4 strokes I think) are 4's, even 175 I think, just bigger block.

Sometimes I fill the kill tank, but thats carrying another 200kg.

My 115 does 20kn at about 42-4400rpm, and 30 WOT (5700).

Consumption at 4300 is roughly 1nm/litre.

Tue, 2011-10-18 18:59

I have a 6meter trailcraft with a 140 suzi i did have a yammi 115 not alot of diff in top end speed but fuel bill has been halved..WOT around 36 knots at 6200rpm ..22knots @ 4200 rpm  is where best fuel econony is i run the a stock standard prop that came on it new.. Putting the suzi on the back was the best thing i ever did..The yami was a good motor did 800 hours and it never missed a beat..I have done 500 hrs with the suzi and same hasn't missed a beat great motor..

thanks willy, thats exactly the sort of info Im after. Was the 115 a 2 or 4 stroke?

Im guessing if the bill was halfed it was a 2stroke?

Mines a 4 but gets about 31kn WOT and just under 20 at 4200.

The 115 was a 2 stroke.. with the suzi 170 km in 2 days used 85liters of fuel. i find the 140 has more torque and dosen't get bogged at lower revs like the 2 banger did it pushes through the rough crap and swell better than the 115 did. i cant fault it
