Swan Crabs.

Hi all hoping to wet the crab nets this arvo. Ive never crabbed in the swan river before. was hoping some1 could point me in the right direction to try and get a few for a nice snack with a couple of coldies as Ive seen a few good catches on the site over the last week or so.

PM me if you want it kept quiet.

Thanks all.

I'm hoping to get out Sunday

Thu, 2011-01-13 12:25

I'm hoping to get out Sunday for my first ever crabbing run as well.  I assume the size limit is the same in the Swan as elsewhere?  Any other tricks of the trade I need to know ie how long do you leave the nets in etc.

Thanks in advance your replies.

whatever you do,

DO NOT put your nets/pots or floats IN A MARKED CHANEL!! this is illegal, and gives everyone the shits. dont go whinging if a charter/big boat cut your ropes and they're in a chanel

saw quite a few guys/boats with pots around near jo jo's restaurant in nedlands/claremont area the other day. could be worth a shot.

swan crabs

Thu, 2011-01-13 12:29

hey lads, we normally leave the nets between 10/15 minutes in the swan, the blowies can be a [pain in the ass,(take plenty of bait) but ive found that tougher baits like tuna heads/lamb necks etc just dont work as well  . cheers

Cheers for that guys, I agree on the channel comment I have no idea what gets into some people when you see where they set pots / nets.  Hopefully I can report on mondya on the awesome feed of crabs we caught.

I can tell you to not bother

Thu, 2011-01-13 16:28

I can tell you to not bother snorkelling for them at the moment, incase you were thinking about that too.. I tried last night at Mosman Bay and the visibility was so bad I could only see about 2 feet infront of me! I did see a fair few crabs.. but the problem was they just had to dart off out of my very limited field of vision and they were gone! With decent visibility you can chase them, but with 2-feet vis, there is no chance..

We went out near canning bridge early using mullet for bait and only got 4 in 2 1/2 ours pulling the pots every 15-20minutes..good size though..I spoke to quite a few punters and they had not even got one.

Hey guys,I did my first Swan

Fri, 2011-01-14 10:11

Hey guys,

I did my first Swan crab session yesterday morning. Only managed to get 1. Only managed to do 2 runs and dropped 5 nets each time and left them for 20 mins.

Think I found a good land based crab spot but. And considering doing ym first snorkel for crabs there!

Anyone been getting any around bwr or chidley? Mate reckons he got 6 of the left bank jetty the other night.

Swan crabs....

Fri, 2011-01-14 13:06

Better spots are from Pt Walter up to the Narrows and Canning Bridge, many crabs in the real shallows also and down to the 13m mark atm.

Move the nets around until you get some blueys and yeh 10-15mins between runs.

We use tuna heads & spleen and plenty of bait as the blowies hammer the bait but when you get a feed its all worth it.

Better crabbing is generally around the high tide however first light is good also if your an early riser.

My boss Ryan is heading out this arvo for another crab run, hopefully dropping me off some on the way home lol

Hi Ocean Tackle,Do you know

Mon, 2011-01-17 13:30

Hi Ocean Tackle,

Do you know if it's shallow enough to scoop for crabs around the canning bridge?

We went scooping down in mandurah yesterday and caught a few, but would rather try and find a place closer to home to scoop for crabs.  So looking for some help!!

 Anyone ever scooped at Point

Mon, 2011-01-17 21:00

Anyone ever scooped at Point Walter and had success? I usually go down Pinjara way but would love a closer spot in the city. Never thought of Pt Walter, but makes sense.

Thoughts?

I have been twice in the last

Tue, 2011-01-18 09:42

I have been twice in the last 2 days and managed to get 8 in 1.5 - 2 hours. Some massive ones out there too. None under size. I think its just a matter of dropping a line of 5 - 10 pots and finding where you are pulling up most and adjusting your pots to suite that area/depth.

Had some idiots dropping pots as close as 2 metres to mine this morning which me and my mate werent impressed with. Crossed there line straight over ours. How hard is it to drop pots at least 50 metres away from someone elses???

CRABBING ETIQUETTE!!!

Went over weekend

Wed, 2011-01-19 00:44

I went on Saturday and Sunday, around East Freo Yacht club.

Caught 13 total, for quite a few hours effort.. but worth it.. (managed a few bream and a nice flathead too)

did a bit of an experiment and tried 3 different baits. Tuna heads, spleen and dead blowies.

Gotta tell ya, the blowies won by far, pulling in 10 of the 13. All males and only 1 undersize.

Have heard Bicton baths is not too great, going to try deeper waters around Blackwall Reach next week.

Can anyone tell me if the moon greatly affects the crabbing?

Cheers
