tackle shop woes
having a bit of a gripe tonight.
this morning i decided to head to bunbury to go looking for a new boat for a friend and do some tackle shopping while there. usually i would go to gotone but mark isnt in the game anymore (damn you :P). so i went for a look in the only other 3 shops i know of. (bcf, leasure and sport and complete angler) all are near bunnings.
do you think its possible to get some service ?? i was in bcf for 30 minutes (no great suprise on no service),and spent about 20 minutes in the other 2 and didnt even get a hello... im all for shopping local. adn i dont mind paying the extra to keep them afloat. but they can get stuffed if im not going to get a simple "can we help you?"
on a happy note i think i saved $1000 by getting my new reels from a company in the USA tonight

I hear you feral. One thing
I hear you feral. One thing i learnt when i was in retail is one of the major factors in making sales in any form of retail is to acknowledge a customer within the first 2-3 minutes of them walking in. Even if the salesman is are busy with another customer they should at least say hello and that they/someone will be with you shortly.
I find with alot of the bigger chain stores, i only go there if you know exactly what i want, pay for it and get out. Dont even ask for advice i have found.
Thats what i love about the smaller stores that really have great customer service it makes it almost fun going to their stores even just to have a chin wag. And then probably buy something you didnt even go in there for! Hahaha!

Nothing bugs me more than
Nothing bugs me more than when there is 2 staff members talking in an empty shop, and for some reason they think that we "the customer"would love to get involved in their conversation about the hot guy/girl they kissed on the weekend, "well i did come here to buy something and go home, but please by all means let me know step by step what happened on the weekend" i'll just stand here holding my items and contemplate walking out the door with them, not that they would notice?

customer service has gone
customer service has gone out the door with a lot of the places these days, the young staff most of them hire are only interested in their pay packet at the end of the week where as the smaller stores sometimes more expencive than the bigger chain stores will have a better customer relations and generally more friendly.i personally dont like going into the big chain stores , its only when i knpow exactly what i want that they will get a look in

a pet peeve of mine as well
As a business owner I am forever cracking the shits about this. I actually have it as one of my three golden rules when I interview new staff. I tell them that if I ever see them walk past a customer without acknowledging them then that will be their last shift.
I do the same when I walk into a shop, 2 minutes, that is a fair time I think to at least be acknowledged. If the sales person is clearly busy and at least lets you know they have seen you, I don't mind waiting for however long it takes, but being ignored shits me.
I can name a few car dealers who have missed out on a certain sale in the past 12 months because of the above rule.

No options in Bunbury now so either buy from Perth or online now........

There are hardly any good
There are hardly any good tackle stores in the SW. Stores like ranger camping and BCF are crap. No service whats so ever. And the guys working there no more about tents than fishing tackle.
I go to the Dunsborough sports store. The guys in there are always going out of their way to help you and have a great knowledge of fishing in the area. They dont carry a lot of stock but have everything you need.
I have also been to Whiteys in Australind and found the service very good there.

mark i think you need to
mark i think you need to open a shop in your back yard mate ... just kick out the falcon :P
i'll give the boys at dunsborough another go if you are finding them ok Seaquest . i dropped in there a few times when i first moved to town here (years back) and they stood around chatting with a few regulars and didnt give me the time of day so i never went back . i get a bit from nigel at geographe camping but he doesnt stock much of the gear i use which is fine for the customers he is aiming at.

The guys that are now at
The guys that are now at Dunsborough are both very keen fishermen. Fished with them a bit of late. Dave who is realatively new there comes from Broome and has had a lot of experiance in billfishing and barra fishing. Give them a go Im sure you want be dissappointed.

Pay
What you pay is what you get!The bigger chains pay their staff peanuts and get monkeys in return. The staff have no incentive to go out of their way to give good and proper service to the paying customer.
One of the few exceptions would have been a young bloke at Tuggerah BCF in NSW at Xmas two years back who went out of his way in giving exceptional service in obtaining 2 extra epirbs from other stores to make up my order for 4 units and gave a good discount as well.
