12v socket in rear tray

Gday all, looking to get a 12v cigarette lighter socket put into the tray of my hilux. It will be cover by th canopy so not in the major elements. Mainly just want it for running accessories from the back, lights, small invertors etc. But would maybe even use it for a WAECO or Engel in the future if i borrow my friends ones.

Got a few quotes from auto electricians and they all said around the $160 mark for a standard single socket.

Just wondering if its better off me buying one of those WAECO RAPS 12v kits and installing it myself. The instructions seem easy enough and i can get one for $100. It says there is even a 'cut off' function where when the battery gets below a certain voltage it turns off.

Just wondering if anyone has installed one of these and how do they go?

Or alternatively does anyone know a cheap good auto sparkie?

why not get a professional to install it? warrantied and so fourth then, rather than you doing it and potentially shorting your electrical system.

Chances are you wont, but you never, never know.....

Buz give kempy a call, they did the same job for me in the back of the Navara. They will beat your quotes.

Waeco sockets

Mon, 2009-11-30 18:50

I done my own socket when I got my 50L waeco - easy as!

The hardest bit was gettting it through the firewall properly and re-sealing the grommet, I ended up installing a new grommet as the dude beofre me had sliced it and siliconed it up (mulitple cables through it).

Do it yourself

I run my power cable to the back for my power winch down underneath no need to go through the firewall follow the clips for the brake lines along the chassis straight to the battery.

I fitted one to the tray of my Navara (covered with a canopy too) which I picked up from the 12V shop

down Welshpool way. It's a bit pricey but at least you can pick from the different types down there (the net was a fair bit cheaper)

I got a well covered one with a dust cap and fitted it myself, running it through a switch on the dash so I can turn it on/off when it suits. Took about a hour to fit from start to finish and runs the Engel and other accessories nicely. I also chucked a LED light above the rear door inside the canpoy, perfect for night stops.

I've always done these kind of things myself. Never found it too difficult.

Cheers
