Tailor rod

 Hey all.

I've always been in love with catching tailor and most of them have been on baits but after seeing so many pics and reading so many tips and techniques about catching them on lures im keen to give it ago. I've got beach outfits and flickies but now searching for something in the middle for poppers and metals.

Does anyone have a rod that is light but also forgiving with a bit of rough treatment in the 15lb line range? Im looking for something in the 7ft at most range preferably a 2 pce rod for under 200 dollars? Ill be matching it with my Stadic 3000FI with 15lb braid.

I was thinking over a 20lb wind on leader should i then put a swivel on then 40lb leader down to a popper/metal slice is that the right way to do it? I'm mainly going to use this outfit for popper fishing but i'll most likely be baitcasting mulies with it as well.

Which lures do you guys and girls like for throwing at tailor? Poppers and metals? I've got a roster popper the small one, and 3 or 4 ritcher plugs as well as quite a few metals in the raider and twisty range. I'm looking for lures in the under 20 dollar bracket?

Cheers Danno

Why not use the squid rod? salmon to herring it will do it plus any metals and poppers you cast will go further then any 7ft rod.

Wayyy too soft of a rod for a dedicated tailor rod, would be horrible for salmon it would be too soft to put any grunt down on a fish. I know because I tried, and it was horrible.

I use a Shimano Raider Snapper 762 with a 4000 fj symetre for pretty much the same purpose as your looking for, quite a versatile little combo and can cast metal slices and small poppers a mile. Hope this helps,     Paul.

Shimano 702 Saltwater Spin Jewel

Thu, 2011-07-07 18:44

Between $129 and $169 for a graphite 7 foot 3-6kg rod (try Bluewater Morley, plenty of stock there). I have mine teamed up with a 2500 stradic and 10 fireline.

Combo has accounted for shitloads of bream, herring, tailor, flatties, smaller GT's, a 5.9kg Salmon and 5 80cm+ Queenies off of an Exmouth Boat Ramp.

See my posts for some of the fish caught on the Jewel. Can't rate it highly enough mate, be crazy not to consider one.

I'm even thinking about adding a second one to the ever increasing collection ;)

Simon

Leader

Thu, 2011-07-07 18:49

And 3 or 4 metres of 10lb Flouro leader is sufficient for this combo, ALL of my fish have been landed on the 10lb fireline tied to a 10lb Nitlon DFC flourocarbon leader.

Knot is usually a slim beauty or on the odd occasion (exmouth etc...) I'll go a Bimini Twist to GT, never had one of these knots fail.

and i'll i keep going.......ha ha

I've found the smaller the slice the more sucessful i've been, try the 15 to 20 gram Halco Twisties. There a winner.

Popper wise, River to Sea dumbell pop, Halco Red/white popper are the go....both under 20 bucks. Little more expensive, but the bomb lure, is a Sebile Splasher massive cup face which gives an awesome "bloop" on the surface. Check out Tackle HQ or Bluewater Morley for the Sebile range :)

I'll shut up now...............

Ritcher by far no 3

Fri, 2011-07-08 16:59

In pink and green, And i go for  a 10ft rod and you can cast out a long way

If the tailor are on the bite Thay wont fail to hit a ritcher

Four cast 4 fish with my m8   And the tailor went 55/52/52/42

If we had a 7ft rod each the fish above would still be swiming

Or you could try the 9ft wilson live fibre trophy, very light you can cast it all day but has enough grunt for even the biggest tailor.

funny you guys should say the Live Fibre. I have the 10'6" version and it's been a ripper of a rod.

The poor thing has had a hard life though. Would be about 7yrs old now. Had to have caught in excess of 300 Salmon and probably 100+ Tailor with it. Casts metals/poppers/Stickbaits/Richters <80grams a mile. She's been eased into retirement now though. My 7'6" or 12' cover most bases nowdays.
