take a fisherman fishing, you get fish

well finally my mate (dicko) and I have aligned the planets to get a fish in together. dicko tends to favour the week days due to family and the availabilty of free dive buddies/FIFO.

we made the decision to take my boat so the master (dicko) could look over me and my sounder  great decision (later regret  bloody wind)

the morning started on a ordinary showing on sounder with no results (basicly a practice run as we never fished my boat before)

as planned we headed out towards a spot we had fished many years before on a previous boat, battled the wind thinking it would only improve .

approaching the area we had fished all those years ago i decided to move slightly south to find the honey hole of all holes, i had set the drift thinking it will be just a single slide by, oh wow did that change.

of the drifts we did (not many), we managed 5 sized dhu's smallest of 580mm including double hook up. 2 were kept 820mm and 850mm 8kg and 10kg (dicko released one bigger). 3 baldies 2 sized but decided only one would be kept.

all of this happened in 1.5 hours on jigs and plastics (more so jigs).

it was worth the 3.50am wake up, what wasn't worth the wake up was the early sea breeze and the smash home.

all i can say is take a fisherman (bloke who knows whats going on) fishing and you'll find it not only easy but a winner cheers dicko your a champ.....

Mon, 2015-03-09 16:36

The Daiwa pirates are working for you!  When you say "now that you know what to look for", does that mean you're now putting more emphasis on fishing structure, rather than looking for fish arches?

Here's a general question of anyone really, does a cave show up on a "bottom lock" view?  has anyone got a picture if they do?

Top stuff

Mon, 2015-03-09 19:07

Yep, when you know what to look for and how it looks on your sounder (provided its set right) then the consistant success will follow. Iv never had to go beyond 40m to catch demersals. Some spots I have caught dhus have been deserted when I have sounded over months later, must get covered in sand. Find the flat coral patches, all the 'lumps' in close have likely been hammered, most boats will be drivin over good fish all the time! Plenty of patches even in the 20s in some areas, my last dhu came from one as did some recent pinkies, just gota fish the 'shallow' water a bit different to deeper spots. Nice work boys given the conditions too, few good meals comin up!

Bloke who has a place behind

Mon, 2015-03-09 19:45

Bloke who has a place behind me up the coast tim-o landed a 10kg model just behind his pots in 5m of water on Sat. And you are right flat coral is the place to look with growth flare ups. My biggest came from hard desert, hoping to hit it again on Friday. And as you say they do move around, no doubt. In answer to randall's question no you can't see caves on a sounder even in bottom lock it's not how they work. Anyone who says they can is full of shit.

I think that is the point

Tue, 2015-03-10 06:43

With Bottom lock and it focusing on that portion of the bottom would not show what is just under, but I could be wrong...

I honestly dont know, can anyone else shed some light?

 You wouldn't see much

Tue, 2015-03-10 07:22

You wouldn't see much randall as bottom lock averages out the signal recieved from the sonar and flattens out the bottom so you can discriminate fish from the the sea bed. That's the point of bottom lock. You need a really good flat sea to get good fish arches and you need to be over the top of them as well. The manufacturers love putting those pics on their demos.

I can guarentee I've seen caves, below ground structure on my FCV587. Maybe people need to learn to read their sounder correctly.

Been waiting a long time to bust my cherry on here and was waiting for a worthwhile few snaps and report! Really good to see those dhuies on the jigs, I'm in the process of trying to work some of that magic metrowise at the moment. Lovely looking baldie too!

Cheers,
