Tamala Station advice

Hey guys, heading up to Tamala camping at Baba Head next week.

Last year we spent a week there at a similar time, caught plenty

of Pinky’s but none over 70cm. We fished various areas out

between the islands but didn’t venture any further.

Has anyone been recently or has a bit of experience there and

could give any advice on how to find some larger models? TIA

 Fish night time for larger

Wed, 2018-05-02 08:29

Fish night time for larger snapper in the deeper channels between the seagrass beds, might also score mulloway and cod.

There are heaps of baldchin there in the shallows, they make tunels in the flat reef there so does not look special but plenty of good size fish. They are quite fussy to hook, burley and prawns or crabs can tempt them. Slipping over the side with a spear and they are very easy to shoot not very sporting though.

we we’re planning on giving sunrise/sunset a go.

So what would you consider a ‘larger’ Snapper? 80/90cm?

Just in general you get the bigger fish than the usual run with some realy big ones amongst them if you are lucky. Sunrise and sun set still the usual fish, but they do go on the bite well. The little ones tend to disapear after dark, if you sit and burley in those channels you can get some really nice size and Mulloway.

We are at Huts as of Monday :-)

Last time we were at tea tree and an hour after sunset for an hour, was the only time we got fish BUT they were all 50cm.

Tamala

Been to Tamala quite a few times, generally staying at the huts. Never had much luck fishing around Guano Islands (I'm assuming that's the islands you were heading to from Baba Head?), there's some good deep water south west of them though (if you head a stright line from there to Salutation island) where there's some bigger pinks usually.  Also a good area just west of Salutation Island in about 12 m that holds some decent Pinks usually (around the 850 - 950 mark). Caught them morning afternoon and midday in the deeper holes no troubles, lots of little sharks in these spots too though. Dusk in and around the islands is good particularly if you can find a bit of deep water close to the rocks I've found.  The pinkies up there love fresh mullet if you are using bait, soft plastics definitley worth a crack too!  IMO the best fishing at Tamala is chasing baldies and bluebone in the shallows around Salutation Island, hard to hook, hard to stop, makes it all the more rewarding when you land one. And you can't beat them on the chew washed down with a few frothies around the campfire!

The Tea Tree camp ramp

Sat, 2018-05-05 20:10

...is not really a ramp, just a random collection of broken rocks where the rock shelf has been broken down. Below it is a small strip of sand then hard rock. But I've launched boats up to 6 m there, just take it slow backing down and pulling out. Don't even need to let the tyres down. Baba Head is rock also, but I remember it as being better than Tea Tree.

Found some Tea Tree shots. This is loading, wind has gone around north, bit sloppy, but it gives you an idea of tthe ramp.

Moorings

Sun, 2018-05-06 07:41

Make sure your moorings are spot on specially the lead up rope as at sea rescue here in Shark Bay and also in Carnarvon  we get calls for dinghies that have broken away and are drifting north. The latest one was found on Dorre Island only because during its travels the epirb was set off  and after establishing that no one was aboard,  tracked till it came ashore near White Beach where the owner chartered a chopper to have a look to see if it was worth recovering then got the blokes in Carnarvon to tow it back.

 Boat ramp at Prickly Point

Tue, 2018-05-08 10:36

Boat ramp at Prickly Point campsite is very good.  It is a naturaly made sloping hard limestone ramp into metre deep water.  As good as some man made ramps I have used.  Prickly point is not bad- long drop dunny, bore water tap and good fishing off the small cliff in the evening. Plenty of black snapper.

Just got to Coral Bay after Huts at Tamala. Didn’t land a size Pinky. Was utterly dismal! Got two sharks and 5 tuskies on a straight hook. And 500 butteries for bait. Here’s hoping CB is better.
